There's a gold- and silver-buying show going on here all week, and I'm off the next two days so I'm thinking about showing up with various silver pieces and a hidden digital recorder to try to see what conversations I can strike up with patrons and buyers. Any suggestions on a list of questions I can ask in casual conversation to get people to thinking without my getting kicked out? Any questions I can ask to antagonize the buyers? This could be a lot of fun.

Hi there-
If my vote means anything in this joint :I, I'd suggest bringing a roll of 90% and a roll of 40% and see what the highest and lowest offers you get are. Or, bring a 1oz. gold coin and do the same thing.
Also, maybe you could post some of the most disgustingly overpriced things you see. Think some ebay sellers are bad?! OMG.

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.
I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |

Unfortunately, Wags, I sold the only gold I had to one of the other Realcent members, but that was only a 5-gram bar. I'm thinking about taking some tarnished SAEs and some BU-ish SAEs to see how different the offers are that I get: "Come on, people, you're just buying silver, not numismatic pieces, right???" I wonder how much the wear on pieces will affect their offers. But I really want to ask probing questions to see what kind of info I can pry out of the buyers.
Any suggestions on what I can take just to see what offers I get? Any suggestions on snide remarks I can make at their offers? |

I think the tarnished SAEs are a good option- no numismatic value, and the math doesn't get any simpler. I would just ask (loudly, because my hearing isn't so good ) why they're only offering, say, $8/apiece for coins that are an ounce of solid silver when the newspaper says that silver is $13/ounce.
I'd also bring some 40% and common 90%, rolls again to keep the math simple, and do some "truth hustling"... Present it as "I had these old coins laying around and wanted to see if they were worth anything", and see if they outright lie about the silver content of them.
If you have a specialty that you can recite numbers for off the top of your head, that can be fun too... like "What do you mean, rare? This was the highest mintage for the whole series!" (that will probably get you kicked out, tho ) |
Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead? |

If you have an old box or coffee can, throw some silver(call them shiny when you speak to a dealer, not silver) in there with some old jeffs and some wheats... Act as if you have no idea what the value is as you got them from a relative, go from there... :)
See how low ball of offer you can get. |

I like this idea. I'm especially curious as to how many dealers try to bilk you if you feign ignorance. You should definitely use Oober's "shiny coins" in the coffee can, approach. Ask want kind of coins they think you have to see how straight they are with you. Bring a friend along to separately ask about their sell prices. Also have your friend offer the same coins, but appearing more knowledgeable. . . "What to you buy 90% for?".
Looking forward to your report! |

| I always wanted to hang out in the parking lot and try to buy the silver before it went in, last time they had one here (seedy part of town) I drove through the parking lot and there was a disgruntled gangbanger walking away with a heavy bag- I let him keep walking. HH Mark |
