| I don't think there can ever be an exact number unless you are talking about brand spanking new ones. Otherwise there is wear and grime that subtract and add weight, respectively. |

Call it 150 and you're never short.

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. I think the range is 147-152.. depending on wear, of course. I always just use the figure 300,000 per ton. 150 per pound.. 3 rolls.. makes figuring really easy. |

| Perhaps someone should add this answer and some other common ones to one of the sorting standards stickys? Just a though. Maybe a FAQ sticky would help serve as a sort of reference thread that everyone can check periodically for updates. |

That's a good distinction in case someone wants 1 pound of 95% copper cents or 1 net pound of copper from 95% copper cents. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Still a newbie here and trying to Google search this forum for answers before I ask a question...
I am preparing my first 50lb bag of zincs to return to BofA. The bag asks to put a face value. Given the 181.4 zincolns per lb., is it safe to put a face value of $90? I want to have the least amount of trouble as I can.
Thanks guys, I really enjoy reading and learning here. |

Zyll,
Since you are local and on my way to work, I would be happy to run them through one of my high speed counters for you to give you the exact count on each bag. The # can vary by a few cents depending on wear, and BofA wants an exact count on their bags. We could hook up after work one night. Though they will take 50 pound bags, I usually just bag them in bags of 5000 so they aren't too heavy for the folks behind the counter to handle. |

I second JP-007's idea. The 'big guys', moderators, etc. could work out an acceptable chart from what HCBTT and slickeast have shared (along with others) to give a realiable chart that all could go by.
this suggestion just IMHO

| 154 the the golden number I go by based on some of my own weighing and averaging of random handfuls from my own hoard, but like everyone says wear and and corrosion throws a kink in the whole deal. I picked a number I was comfortable with and stuck with it. |

Good question... but since there is no golden answer for everyone, it may not have REALLY answered your question.
Made me think though, how much DOES grime add to the weight?
From experience, it would depend, in part, on where you live in the country. Seems to me that southern pennies are dirtier than northern pennies. |

One thing I've never seen: HOW MANY ZINCOLNS WOULD IT TAKE TO PUT TOGETHER A POUND OF COPPER? Let's see... 181.4 per pound... at 2.5% copper... carry the one... 7256! Seems a little much to have to hoard for three bucks worth of copper... But you would have 39 pounds of zinc hoarded - that's a better way to look at it. 186 zincolns for a pound of zinc. |

Just for somemore input on weight. On my certifed for trade scale, I always come up with 147. That is random tests over long periods of time and samples. The nice thing about having a good scale is if you're buying or selling 25 or 50 or 100 pounds of pennies it is exactly that, whatever the condition of the coins or the actual piece count. I guess you need your counter if you get to dump at a bank that will take them a bag at a time and to roll them. I know everyones situation is different, but whether I've deposited at a bank or directly at the armored car faucility, even after tens of thousands of $50 bags deposited, I've never ever had one come back for any reason light or heavy, if it had a tag and a seal on it that says $50.00 Pennies. Its not worth there time to weigh them. ( I undertand tags and seals aren't really real life for many sorters) When I deposit mixed coin at my bank, I always leave the deposit ticket open because no matter what my piece counter says... it rarley matches theirs, and theirs in always correct. 8-) All that to say that even when your talking pieces and counting them its whatever they say it is..... Thats way more than I meant to write and there really isn't a point, just some random info to chunk into the back of your mind that might come in handy someday...... |

Zyll, I guess Friday night was too soon.. lol. Not sure if 50 pounds of zinc will actually fit in one of those BofA coin shipment bags. 7500 coppers is about 50 pounds and that fills them up pretty good. That many zincs would only weigh about 42 pounds. I'm pretty good at packing.. being able to get $100 face in copper in a medium flat rate box and make weight, and I even got a mint sewn bag of copper cents in a flat rate envelope back in the good ol' days when the rate was just $3.20, but even I might have trouble getting 50 pounds of zinc in a coin shipment bag. I'll PM you and we can work out the details for this week. |
