... nickel you are going to save up as a result of hoarding?
i primarily have set a target based on my body weight, so it is about 300 dollars worth of pennies and about 800 dollars worth of nickels; each weighs about 160 pounds
if they are cashed in by face value, they will fetch about 70 silver maple leafs; but if they are sold today by their metal content(if there's a buyer), i can fetch about 140 silver maple leafs
i doubt i will just stop at 160 pounds though, because hoarding is becoming a treasure hunt, hobby, investment strategy, retirement plan, and an obsession
maybe a girlfriend will "save" me from this
teach your kids to sort pennies, and they will not spend your money like crazy

As we talked about here in a previous topic, why not start to work-out by lifting those bags of pennies and nickels until your body weight increases to 230 pounds of muscle? Then you will be even richer when the price of base metals goes up.
A woman in your life will either make your life rich or poor and it has little to do with money.

I don't have a weight or dollar goal in mind when it comes to copper or nickel.
With copper pennies, I will hoard them from general circulation by buying $25 boxes and sorting them out until I fail to get 7% coppers per box for 8 boxes in a row. The 8 boxes in a row is to help rule out bad luck. That to me would indicate that the coppers are becoming scarce enough that my time is not worth the sorting any longer.
After that point, I'll stick to buying boxes of nickels which is great since I won't have to bother with sorting them .
I'll hoard nickel and copper until either (1.) I am independently wealthy due to the value of the metal content OR (2.) I run out of space in my house, which is unlikely.

I don't have a specific amount, either in dollars or pounds that I shooting for with any metals. Copper is the only metal that I currently own more than my body weight in.
I plan to keep buying and sorting coppers until there aren't many to be found in circulation. I will not stop while it is still out there to be had...I will take all I can get while the getting is good.

| I want to get enough pure pre-81 canadian nickels that I can dump them all in a big room and swim in them like Scroodge McDuck. |

| I plan on collecting as much as I can like most of the rest of you. I bought about $4,000 of silver collectable US coins back when it was in the low $4 range. I've done quite well on that investment. The pre-82 US coppers will take quite a bit longer to make significant money, but it's free money. I have plenty of space in my basement to store them. I would like to get to 1 million pennies, which would equate out to 400 Brinks boxes, or $10,000 profit at 2 cents each scrap value. I currently have about 80 lbs or 12,400 pre-82 pennies. (155 pennies/lb). I hope the price of copper stays where it's at for the short term. The less of us doing this the better. |

I am updating my stated hoarding goal. In addition to a vault room full of coins to swim in, I want to hoard enough copper and nickel to construct a 110-foot alloy yacht hull, of suitable ocean-going thickness, to sail around the world in for my retirement.

I haven't sorted since I finished sorting the massive amount of pennies around. I have post-sort'em depression.

Are you sure about that, John? I could have sworn I saw in another thread that you sorted 4 pennies one night. I think I have suffered from "post-sort'em depression" in the past also. You will be back.. those pennies are calling to you.
I am a big guy, but I have already exceeded that body weight goal since I have 2 tons of copper pennies. I guess my next goal will be 3 tons. Of course it might take a while to get there since I occasionally sell off small parts of the hoard when profit opportunities present themselves.

ACtually, I too have noticed that periods of heavy sorting (say 10 boxes over 3 days) can be very draining. I imagine all that exposure to nano particles of metal + random bacteria from thousands of hands makes the immune system work overtime. Couple that with the intense concentration and it makes sense that it can turn from an enjoyable meditation to a stressful chore. I'm glad my coin artist is coming.

CN,
please tell me where you are getting this coin sorter, and if it can sort different types of canadian 5-cent pieces, thank you,
i apologize if you guys have already discussed this before
p.s. i am wondering how much our hoarding is a factor of increasing the demand for the the metal(s) we call nickel and/or copper; maybe some "think tank" can come up with the amount of hoards needed to be critical enough to become a factor to change the prices significantly? |

Our total hoarding would not take as much copper and nickel as a grain of sand in a child's sandbox. That's good news because we are to small for the goverment to mess with much.

Not if she is like my wife. I took my wife to my hoard today. She has not seen it in a while. When she saw how much it has growned her eyes lit-up. Nickels are a girl's best friend.

My goals are to fill my coffee can and wine jug. I keep my nickels in the coffee can and pennies in the wine jug. When they get full I dump them in larger containers and then start all over again. My new goal is to try to find someplace around where I live to get some canadian nickels(so far I only have 5).
