I just got off the phone with the police after some people started a fire pit behind my apartment building to make s'mores, and I didn't realize that apparently fires inside city limits here are legal under certain circumstances (which I plan to research), but the thought occurred to me that if displaced people end up with only fire as a means for cooking or staying warm inside city limits (again, if it's legal), there could be major safety issues. So the floor is open for tips on fire safety, what to do, not to do, etc.

| In our little city, as long as it's in a premanufactured fire ring your good. Not so much for just a pit in the ground. Again little suburb... |

I think it's only permitted to cook food or keep warm. Not to just burn or to dispose of trash.
Forgot to add, and only if it's not on a bad air day. |

| I carry a small fire extinguisher in the trunk of my car - I would suggest this to anyone who can spare the 10 or 15 bucks. |

The borough here banned burning trash a couple years ago, much to the dismay of almost everybody except the three or so people that led the fight against it. "Recreational burning" is still allowed.
Luckily I'm outside the borough limits by a good distance, and burning trash is legal six days a week. As long as you are responsible, you can burn pretty much any time and nobody seems to care. With my family, burning the paper trash, tossing most food scrap into the woods, and recycling plastic, glass, steel cans, and aluminum cans reduces our garbage by probably 70%. We very rarely have more than one can a week, and it usually isn't full. |
