I went to this new bank last Friday, got a box, and it contained 38 wheats and a BU 1955-S. So, I went back today to get another box... and they're all brand new 2008!
Can I just bring the box to another bank and drop it off, or will they complain when they see that they're all still machine wrapped in plastic?

| Most banks do not like this and it raises questions on how you got such a box. But I think you have more of a gem than you think. 2008 BU pennies are quite collectable and many members here would pay over face value to get them, last them I checked. |

Really? Should I just start an auction here?
It's no fun for sorting though. Does anyone here try to avoid getting the 2008's (e.g. bringing a scale to the bank), or is it actually a good and rare thing? |

Yup what he said! Sell them on here. I think slickeast likes to buy them. Maybe send him a PM? Otherwise put them in the buy and sell section. |

They arent really rare, but its a lower mintage than recent years. They bring a small premium. Defintly dont avoid getting them.
Just like the 09 pennies bring a premium also. |

Why are they collectible though? I don't get it. Are people just holding on to them for 50 years so in 2058 they can advertise "GEM BU 2008 CENTS!!!" on QVC?
Alright, thanks for the replies. |

Recent BU pennies are like that. Back in 2007 and 2008 while sorting you would dread getting such boxes, but when a year rolls around you no longer see complete BU boxes, then you realize that their hard to find. I have returned BU boxes of 2007's and 08's, now with much regret. There has been the lower mintages and recent talk about discontinuing the cent as well.
I wonder what a BU box of 1995's would bring? Hmm... |

| NEVER return BU boxes. They are worth money, and are an easy sell. |

Definitely keep them like everyone said.
As to your question about dumping a sealed box, I did it once with dimes last summer with a CWI box. They were all '08s.
The teller didn't know what to make of it, so I immediately told her somebody owed me money and thought it was cute to pay me with a box of dimes.
She said OK, and bought the box and put it in the vault.

They arent worth $70. People are just going crazy on ebay. You saw so many ads for $70 because they arent selling for that. |

I looked at the history for a couple buy it nows, and they had about 5-6 purchases at $70 and one at $85 in the last few months. So those are actually people clicking Buy it Now at those prices. |

Generally, I think the NF string wrappers with an unopened box is worth more. I'd still try and sell it to see what you can get for it. I'm guessing you'd clear at least $50 after shipping. |

I like Shiny! If copper is what you are after, I would swap you a box of copper cents for each box of BU zinc cents. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

I wonder if I should hold on to it for a year. These have a lower mintage than the 2007s, yet 2007 boxes sold recently on eBay for much more than the 2008's - e.g. You must be logged in to see this link. and You must be logged in to see this link., compared to $70 for 2008.
What do you guys think? Is there any reason the 2007 would bid up so much? Any high demand varieties? Or is it simply due to the scarcity two years later?
And more importantly (for me ) - will the same thing happen for the 2008's next year? |

How much more for the paper wrapped ones in an unopened box? I happen to have one... 08s, I mean. |

I have noticed as time passes the prices on BU coins go up. I have seen boxes of BU pennies from the 90's go for 150 or more.
Everything has a market niche. You just have to find the right buyer. My buy price is not exciting but some people don't care to deal or keep BU boxes and I will offer more than a bank trade.
Hold on to them and if you don't see a market for them in 2-5 years you are not out any money. But I would speculate that in the future they will have some numismatic value. |

just a generalization, and not "out of this world" more. they're basically worth whatever soemone is willing to pay. who knows, someone might rather have these coins in the plastic condoms over the paper rolls. |
