I urge everyone to contact their representatives to combat this bill! Here is a letter I sent to my representative..
Brett Guthrie,
My name is Taylor * and ************************************************. I contacted you a few weeks ago regarding HR 1207, and fortunately you are now a co-sponsor. I would like to thank you for valuing my opinion on the matter. I hope you will not let me down this time, either. There is a bill (HR 1966), or the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which I believe is unconstitutional and would restrict free speech. The bill states, "Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce [radio, TV, internet] any communication, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person, using electronic means to support severe, repeated, and hostile behavior, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both ... This bill creates special protective status based on race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability." In other words, if a talk show host engages in “hostile” speech against a person or persons of the above mentioned federally protected group that talk show host will face federal prosecution and the prospect of a two year prison term. Alan Potash, the director of the Anti-Defamation League for the Plains States and a major supporter of the bill, even had the audacity to state, "freedom of speech does not extend to racist groups." I have not and will not ever support racism, but who am I (or any other person for that matter), to restrict someone's free thinking, even if it does offend a group of people? I have some pretty "radical" views according to most people regarding my belief in a Non-interventionist foreign policy, a long with my hate of statism, and I would be outraged if someone tried to restrict my views, based solely on the fact that they didn't agree with me! As a freedom-loving citizen, I demand that you use every means available to you to combat this unconstitutional legislation! I look forward to hearing from you again.
