I always thought the term cent came from the other uses of the "cent" i.e. centinmeter 1/100th of meter. Cent is 1/100 of dollar. Im sure this was mentioned earlier in the thread though.

Also if you go into a bank and ask for a box of cents they don't know what you are talking about.

You mean pennies? Yes... pennies.
