Hey guys, maybe its because I'm lazy or just trust you guys more but a lady contacted me to come buy her 1885 V-nickel from her and is wanting 300.00 or so for it. I worried about accurately grading it and cleaning/fake coins and such. Does anybody know of a quick good reference I can look at for a quick lesson. I usually stick to bullion unless I can get a good enough deal to flip a numis coin to make it worth while. Any help would be much appreciated.

Scott

You can usually tell if a coin is cleaned or polished. Bring another V nickel to compare it to if you are unsure. The thing you really need to look out for is altered dates. Many 1895's are turned into 1885's. You will need a good loope and a basic knowldedge of how the date should look. I suggest going to a coin dealer and asking to look at one and asking him how he can tell altered dates on this coin.

For grading there are a number of grading guides that you can buy. If you are doing this more than once I would go ahead and buy 1. They are only like $20. But for $300 you cant go wrong!

If it truely is an 1885 than $300 is a steal!

Yes, definately be careful of altered dates on that one. Look for tooling marks with a high powered loope.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

To start with you never mentioned who this lady was. Is it a friend, relative, neighbor? Someone you work with? How did she know your into coins? She obviously knows something about coins since she wants $300. Figuring that coin starts at about $500+ in the worst grade of a G4 area I'd wonder why she is asking only $300.
Of course she just may not want to go through the trouble of finding some dealer to buy it for a decent price or maybe already has.

Well, didn't know the lady at all. She found one of my craigslist ads and called me up. She had called a couple of dealers in Houston and they gave her a sight unseen price of 250.00. She knew it was worth something then and looked up the first place that google pointed her to, an old price guide ,lol. She said she couldn't make the drive to houston and felt it was worth more than 250.00 after looking it up. I agreed it might be worth more if in the right condition and agreed to meet with her. She was missing most of her teeth, had a old raggy T-shirt on, and looked like she was only 30. Ummm great people these east Texans are sometimes, lol. Said her son brought it home from school one day. The coin "looked" authentic so I took a gamble on it. It has some minor damage as well, but overall a decent coin if its an 1885. Highroller is going to take a second look at it for me, so I'll see what his opinion is on the coin.
