Go ahead and laugh all you want at what I am about to post. My husband was there and he laughed his head off at me.
On Friday I purchased my first gold coin. All that I could afford to buy. It is a 1/4 gram of gold, replica coin. I got it for $8.00. That is my big plunge into the gold market. I promptly had my husband drive to the bank so I could put it away in the safe deposit box.
Hope no one is injured while experiencing fits of uncontrolled laughter!
Enjoy.

Starting with a small bit is just the thing to make you buy more. I hope your husband will be in a good mood when you buy your first Kruggarand some time soon.
Best wishes on your stacking. |

No harm leaving it in the safe deposit box in this instance, at least you won't accidentally throw it away or misplace it. The next time you go to the safe deposit box label it “lucky brass coin” to prevent possible confiscation (nobody would believe it is gold if it is marked brass coin.)
Thanks for the daily chuckle about your Big gold purchase, you have to start somewhere… |

Hey, that's 1/4 gram more than most people. |

| Not a bad deal. Start hitting some yard sales, another way to start building the stash at an affordable price. |

Simplicity, what do you look for at yard sales that has gold?
And I think there is a lot to be said for having the smaller gold coins; maybe 1/10 Kruggrands or some such. Or even grams. If you are holding gold as part of a strategy to prepare for either extreme inflation or worse the collapse of fiat currencies, it would be difficult for most of us to barter with large gold coins for the daily needs. The smaller the better, if you are considering the remote possibility that the dollar looses most of its remaining value. It is hard for me to imagine how I would pay for a gallon of gas at $400 with a Kruggrand valued at $8,000. (I'd sure want my change in silver or gold) |

| You can find anything at yard sales, wedding bands, egagement rings, bracelets, necklaces, and on a rare chance coins. I found a 14K necklace last Friday that weighs 4.75 grams. They had $10.00 on it, which is high for a yard sale, but a teriffic buy for a person looking for gold. Three weeks ago I found a 14K ring with a fake diamond in it for a buck. It weighed a little over 5 grams with the stone removed. I seem to find .925 silver chains for a quarter the most often. They usually weigh 2-8 grams. I look for anything that is around 20 cents a gram when it comes to silver. With 14K gold, right now I look for anything under $14 a gram. I personally go to yard sales looking for textbooks, so the gold and silver is just a bonus. I also find a lot of copper cables in free boxes :). |

I've enjoyed all of the replies and the advice posted in this topic. Thanks.
I try to go to yard sales now that my husband has Friday/Saturday off. When he was off just week days we never saw any and most thrift stores in the area never have anything good or if they do they want a high price for it.
I've never seen any coins or any good jewelry to try to buy, though, at yard sales. But will keep looking for it. I know my niece in another state has had some good luck finding coins for her dad this way.
Do you carry a small scale with you to weigh the items? Don't people look at you funny if that is the case. I would be afraid they would raise their price.
I still have not found a small digital scale any where. I asked at a coin show back in March and no one had any for sale--not even the coin supply booth. I'm not allowed to buy online so anything that way is out for me.
Enjoy. |

| I carry a scale. If someone has a ring for a dollar and it is marked 10K or 14K just buy it. But if someone has something marked $20.00 or $25.00, then pull out your scale and tell them you are seeing what the gold is actually worth to see if it is worth buying. If it's not worth its weight, they will usually come down. Same with silver, if it is a quarter buy it, if they want a lot of money for it, weigh it first. Most people don't care, just tell them you are seeing what it is worth and that you are a collector. People will ask, but only because of their curiosity. 99% of people could care less what you are doing, but just want to know what you are doing. |
