Hi Everyone,

I was looking through a roll of halves and found what looked like a silver half dollar. From the side view it stood out from the other clad coins, but when i looked at the date it was 1972. I've researched the year and found no listings of silver proofs that year. I don't recall if it had a mint mark on it, but definitely wasn't "S" marked. The weight is around 11.5 grams.

I'll check for a mint mark tonight, weigh it again, and post a pic or two.

But any thoughts in the mean time?

There were no silver half dollars in 1972. The 1972-S is a clad.

I have seen silver like edges similar to those you are describing on early clads. It's almost like these coins were at one time mixed with silver coins and some of the silver dust adhered to the edge of the coin.

Someone has dipped it into something that look the copper strip off the outside or made it colored to look like silver.

Unless it has a S mint mark it isnt silver.

Probably was "layered" in something. Who can remember the state quarters layered in pure gold and/or pure platinum?

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of it's victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Those early 70's coins will sometimes trick ya if you are edge searching.

I haven't seen a silver edge in sooo long from box searching. Where did they all go?

the weight is on the high side. possible it was struck on a 40% blank, but also possible it was dipped. Does it pass the "ring" test?

***Does it pass the "ring" test?***

This is a good way to ID Ag.
Bounce it on a cutting board with a known 90%, 40% and a regular clad.
You'll know (or at least have a better idea) what it is by the sound.

I'm going to guess it's a plated regular clad Half.

There's profit if you melt things!!

the copper nickel haves weigh 11.34 and the forty percent haves weigh 11.5. So if it does weigh 11.5 it could be silver. Do the ring test as computer said and let us know

I've seen 'em like that too, some even looked chromed, not silver though, I even took one and filed it a little on the edge, guess what? ....Yep, there's a copper sandwich inside...lol

Unless I'm mistaken, the next silver in a Kennedy after '70, was 1976
