On the reverse of a mercury dime is a hatchett looking thing called a fasces (I think). The way to judge the condition of a merc is to look at the cord or rope that is wrapped diagonally around it. Here is a pic of a merc I just found today....







My book would give this coin a rating of EF-40...Extremely fine.

There is slight wear on the diagonal bands.

I think you got it graded correctly - looks EF-40 to me. Too bad it's not a key date. Then, you'd really have something.
