Well, that might explain why the silver seems lower. If the silver dried up completely, I would loose an ineresting hobby, but gain back about 10 hours a week of my time. What's the name of the company? I will try to find out what they are finding.

Not bad for one box. That is more than I have found in the 5 or 6 boxes I have done total.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

I ask for half dollars once in a while. Almost all the banks tell me they have a few (like 3 or 4 COINS) or none. I have no idea where you guys are getting boxes of half dollars from but the banks around me keep none in stock.

You've got have your bank order them. Start with one $500 box of halves and work you way up from there. Talk to the head teller that does the ordering of coins and currency for that branch. If you've been with a bank awhile, I'm sure they will order you a $500 box of halves. Never, never bring the halves back to the bank that gave you the $500 box. Locate a bank you can use as a dump bank.

On another note, I've been very fortunate this month. I've found 158 40%ers and 85 90%ers so far this month going through $8735 of halves in $500 boxes, CWRs, and teller trays. For me, hunting for silver has been well worth the time. I think the key is to have a well thought out system that works for you.

That's a nice pick up for 90%. Most of wish we could find someone to sell 90% to us at 8X.

Check out the "Official 2009 Half Dollars and Other Coins" thread in the "Silver Coins, Gold, and other Bullion Metals" section. You will see that many of us search $1000's to find a few silvers. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it.

Pretty much! It's 40% strategy 60% luck. Shooting blind with no strategy = lots more failures.

It is hard work to look for halves but when you hit pay dirt it is worth it at that time.

I just sorted my very first halves. Picked up $300.00 in pennies and tellers tried to get me to take their quarters. I said no but how about halves. I bought $1000.00 CWR bag and I think I did OK.

6 Franklins
2 64 Kennedys
15 40% Kennedys
3 $2.00 Canadian Coins
1 $10 Peso coin
1 10 New Pence w/Elizabeth II
1 Arab Coin ?????
1 Regular Quarter - (50% loss)

Kinda like this silver huntin vs pennies!!!

watched a guy lose 8.9% to a Coinstar machine, he kept trying to put one or more coins back through that kept getting rejected. When he left I went and found a nice 1964 dime sitting right there on top. He had no idea, must have thought it was fake or something.

a dollar in my favor!!

OK, it's been a couple months and I think I've finally gotten over being skunked, as I'm planning to order another box of halves this week...and of course bribe the tellers with chocolate. I'll let you guys know how this batch turns out. I should be picking up the box at the end of next week.

Yay glad you are back to getting halves Nickelless.

I got another box today and was happy with the results.

2 - 90%
5 - 40%

Could someone start a sticky thread where people could post their finds from half dollar boxes?

I love posting my finds but also get very excited about reading what other people find.

Thanks

Halves hunting and loose change. The last silver I got from circulation was last year.

Either the people in this part of the country know what they have or someone has beaten me to them.

Awake, O kings of the earth! Come ye, O, come ye, with your gold and your silver, to the help of my people, to the house of the daughters of Zion, to the help of the people of the God of this Land even Jesus Christ.

Well worn Rosevelts and Mercs, but in the $.80 range I jumped on nearly all of it.

Earlier this afternoon I talked to the bank that I'd ordered my first box of halves from (which was also the bank I was ordering $400 worth of pennies from when I still had my Ryedale) and they told me that their policy now was that they could only order boxes of coins for people who had "active" accounts. (My account has 1 cent in it and hasn't moved in months.) So I called the bank where I get direct deposit for work and they said they would order a bag ($1000) that would be in next week. In talking with the vault manager, he said they roll coins that come in bags, so my only fear is that someone dumping halves into a rolling machine will cherry-pick silver. We'll see next week what happens.

The line I'm giving banks is that I like to have emergency cash on hand at home, and it's a bigger pain in the butt to carry around and/or spend coins, so that's why I'd rather have $1,000 worth of halves than 10 C-notes.

Wow Nickelless, With a line like that, these banks must take you for being one paranoid nutjob. Seriously how do they respond to a statement like that. I've never had to explain myself or reasons for wanting coins. Also I'd have created an account just to be a pain with that other bank.

There's no greater feeling than seeing the pleasant features of a bank teller/manager melt to grim as they notice your arrival.

Would you want to make a paranoid nutjob upset, or would you rather just give him what he wants and let him go on his merry way?

I received a 1957 Roosy today in change at a 'Starbucks' kiosk. First one in years.
