I noticed it on the cereals. But not much on the boxes/cans of other foods.

This article is dead on. Just check the half gallon ice cream box you buy. It's now got 48 oz. of ice cream in it - where did the extra 1/2 quart go ? Notice the canned goods - all of them are getting smaller by 1/2 oz. increments. Cat food - No longer 6oz, now 5.5 oz. It's everywhere to be found in your grocery store. The boxes and packages are getting smaller every few months. Those of you who have wives, I'll bet she knows all about this!

I prefer higher prices and more transparency about what's going on. I don't mind higher prices if I feel like they're just doing what they need to do to stay in business, but I'm not happy when companies try to pull the wool over our eyes. I've noticed canned vegetables such as diced tomatoes (which I buy about a case of every two weeks) have gotten an ounce smaller.

So ya'll are just figuring it out. I work in a grocery store and have been stocking shelves since 1989. I have seen it more in the last 3 years than I have over the previous 17 years. Totinos pizzas use to be the size of a large plate. Now they are about thr size of a saucer.

I remember about 2 years ago when one of the cereal companys cut the size on almost all of their boxes.

Just noticed that Classico spaghetti sauce just went from 26oz to 24 oz....for the same low price.

15 ounce cans of veggies instead of 16.

This way they can leave the prices the same and still pull the same profit. I don't like it because it is deceptive. Thay will plaster 20% more all over a package but not 10% less.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

Nice article. I have known about this for a couple of years since I like food! Seriously though, some deflationists will argue that inflation for everyday goods is not happening, but what's the difference if you pay $5 for 5 ounces, or $5 for 4.5 ounces? Alot of people wouldnt notice the 1/2 ounce decrease and just assume the price hasnt gone up, but the price per ounce (or price per unit) is going up and many have no idea about this. It's good to raise awareness of this.

It reminds me of airline tickets. Last year I had discussions with friends about how airline tickets werent going up per se, but all the extra fees were (2nd checked bag costing $50 for example, or $5 for a snack box when they used to serve snacks for free).

I think there is a term in economics related to this called hedonics, but maybe someone here knows more about this subject.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

That is why we do all our shopping by the ounce. In many stores the ounce prices are listed with, so that we are always comparing oranges with oranges. Unless the quality itself is going down.
