Hello all. I am just getting into scrap metal. I am only 14 and are doing just to get some pocket change. This is my first time scraping metal and I am VERY un- experianced. I have so far a crib frame, a crip spring, two bars to the crib, a cast-iron sink, two faucets, around 20-40 cans, a couple metal bars, a trailer hitch, a bunch of toaster parts, aluminum casing from the toaster, part of a CD drive, and a weight bar. Tomorrow is trash day and I hope to pick some stuff up . Currently I'm looking for advice on how to identify metals and what is worth my time to scrap and what's not. If I could put up some pictures of these toaster partsn I was talking about would you guys be able to tell me what I should do with them? Thank you for the all the help.

Welcome to the forum!

Glad to see you starting at such a young age

I dont do much scrapping, but always look for brass fittings on old appliances and stuff.

The faucets may have brass on the inside. Check the fittings where the supply hoses attach. If it's a yellowish metal instead of plastic it's usually Brass.

Are you throwing that out?

Welcome.

I know there are several guys on here who do this regularly. I save the cans that we drink and try to haul off any metal we have to the recycling center. If you have one near you stop by and ask them for help. They might be able to show you some of the different metals they take in.

carry a small magnet in your pocket. If it sticks that means its ferrous, or has iron in it, if not, non ferrous like aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, etc.

When I was a young teen, I'd love to bicycle ride all over creation. You may take an interest in getting a rack to put on a bike and go on a ride to find recyclable stuff. I'll tell you also, since you are so young, start saving copper cents and nickel coins as much as you can. I assume you live under your parents' roof. Your bills are minimal I bet. Start saving your cash and putting it into copper cents!

Most of what you have sounds like steel. 4 cents a pound in AZ. Cut the electric cords off they are insulated copper wire. About 80 cents a pound. Brass in the faucets. $1.00 a pound. Scrap aluminum 45 cents a pound and cans 35 cents a pound. Be sure you know the scrap metal laws in your state. And decide depending on how much room you have on what to scrap or store for the price to go up!Also call around before you go tto the yard to turn in. Prices do differ from yard to yard!

The heating coils in toasters are a special alloy (nichrome) and so far as I know, not easily recyclable. Other electronics like fuses or diodes are generally not recyclable.

It sounds like you have a lot of steel. Steel takes up a lot of room and you will need a truck to get it to the scrapyard. It is also the least valuable of the metals. Steel is measured by the ton whereas most other metals are by the pound.

I'd suggest starting a container for insulated copper wires. These are easy to find. You can just cut the wire where it enters the appliance, like the toaster, or sometimes you can open up the machine and see lots of wires all over the place. You don't have to cut the prongs off of the ends or strip the insulation or anything, just throw them in a box. They'll add up quickly and bring a decent price.

Aluminum cans are easy but may be stinky if you get 'em from the side of the road. I fill up a 32gallon trash can with uncrushed cans and get $3-5, so you really need to stockpile a lot to make money.

Do you have a scrapyard or two that you know you can deal with?

Don't let them put it "in the bin" till you have been told what you'll get.
