A friend asked me to see if someone on here might help with a question. She purchased an old RV that needed alot of inside work and the couch and carpet had to go. After almost a full day of removing bolts in the couch it finally came out. There laying in the corner was a large (quite heavy) dirty black looking brick thing as she called it. Needing a break, she took it and the other trash and chunked it by the garage door. A couple days later she discovered it had writing on it so decided to try to clean it up a little and well it was one of those large silver bars. I do not know much about bars but it had a Canadian name on it, .999 pure, a number but didn't have the actual word silver on it. What or where should she take it or call to find out about it. The original owner has passed away and no other name on the title. She is wondering if she takes it somewhere will they require her to turn it in since it has a number on it. Any help will be appreciated.

It sounds like someone had plans to use the RV as part of a "bug out" plan and the bar got lost along with its orginal owner. I would look around for more of them. A good coin or bullion shop should be able to tell you if it is silver or not. I wouldn't go into any stories as to how she came about it. IMO, it is hers now both legal and morally.

Silver bar? What silver bar?

-or-

Weigh it first, then go to a reputable dealer and ask what they would give for it. They'll probably test it and make an offer. You then know it's real. Say, "No thanks," and walk out. Done deal. I've never been asked where my silver came any time I've sold.

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Yeah, Ardent Listener is right, I'd tear that place apart. Gotta be more there.

I was going to ask why don't things like that happen to me? But then I got to thinking it might, but I would be the orginal owner instead.

To determine what you've got, you need to describe exactly what imprinting you see on the bar. Look on all sides of this bar. Is there some sort of Coat-of-Arms showing? Why do you say there is Canadian writing on the bar? The serial number on larger Canadian bars is a good thing: It gives the owner of the bar some traceability and a sense of genuineness (along with the certificate which you do not have). Most genuine Canadian silver bars have serial numbers. What is the rough weight of the bar? 100oz, 850oz, or some other value? Once you have this initial information, you can research your bar futher.

Was the RV exterior white with a tan/brown/black/light blue stripe on it? If so I know the family of the owner of the dirty brick found under the couch.

Please assure your friend that it is not silver, it’s just a dirty brick. In some parts of the world it is considered lucky to carry around a dirty brick. This particular brick has sentimental family value. The .999 pure is some reference to the “old world spelling” of the family name.

Smartinson, please have your friend contact me and I will get her in touch with the family who very much want to see the brick again.

I only saw it one time about a year ago and can't remember much about it but was talking to her about buying and selling gold and silver and mentioned this forum. She said she was just going to put it up and let her children research it. She was hoping it was platinum but I don't think so. The name was _________ Canadian Mining Company. Her main concern was that she would have to turn it over to someone and the RV was bought new by the gentleman that passed on. I would say it weighs 100 oz. I sure wish I had been there to carry out her trash lol. Maybe she will bring it out from HER secret hiding place and we can do a search. Thanks for all the information and I will pass it on to her. I assume that the original owner (if still living) would love to have it back right now.

Sure sounds just like the old RV they have sitting in the drive way right down to the light blue stripe. I will definately call her right now and I know that she will be so glad that the mystery of the dirty old black brick thing is finally solved and she no longer has to sleep atop of that big bump under her mattress. It has really been weighing on her mind lately, wondering if she should still stand guard at night. Thanks all.

Ardent is right I believe. She bought the RV and its contents. It's not her fault that the sellers didnt know about the presumed silver bar(s) stashed throughout.

Wish something like this would happen to me...lol

Wouldn't it be nice to find something like that! So glad it didn't go in the trash. She is going to take it to a Jewelry Store/Coin Dealer after I told her what I found out here. Hope it is authentic!
