I had 5 Ryedale machines running at once today. All feed coin in open buckets ($100FV per bucket). It was just about all i could do to keep the 5 machines fed and keep transfering zinc/copper to the sorted pails. A couple of the machines have cardboard nickel boxes for outfeed - a couple have large metal ammo cans.
I might be able to run a 6th machine.....but with 5 going I was working up a sweat keeping up. Very few jams...started with clean machines.
5 screaming machines is quite loud.....sorting a $25 box every 90 seconds.....a $100FV bucket every 6 - 7 minutes.
I sorted $2000FV so far......41% copper - this is from my 1.25 Ton Canadian lode.....might finish it up tonight. 500# of coppers so far out of the $2000FV.....another $2100FV to go....might make the 1000# copper out of this sort....

| You are making me think I should get another machine. It would cut my sort time in half. There are a lot weeks that I pick up $1500.00 in pennies from my supply banks. It takes a while to push $1500.00 through one machine. I wouldn't spend quite as much time in the penny cave. The wife would like that. Although knowing me I would probably find a couple more supply banks and increase the penny supply and still spend the same amount of time down there. |

I think 3 is the sweet spot.....but at 3 you are still wanting more.....
But 3 will knock off about $10FV/minute....so a $1500 week would be about 3 hours for the entire sort activity in your shop.....on a single pass....but on US I do a zinc cleanse + a copper resort to hunt the old wheats. This is where more machines are nice.
I figure my time is worth something ...and someday I'll sell the machines used and get back a very large percentage of the machine costs....so it is just $ tied up...not all gone forever.
I did $1000 weeks on a single machine for a long time....it is a lot of time in the shop sorting.....worth getting an additional machine or 3...
I only sort loose coin now...never rolled....so no unwrapping delays. |

I use 2 but usually only have 500.00 to run at a time.
I also let them fall into large square cat litter pails. 200.00 is about the limit before they try to bounce out.
it would be nice to have one more that way I can do zinc accept on 2 and have one running copper accept to cleanse the pile.
I will probably start looking for one after I get the cs-95. that way I can clean out the junk and hopefully eliminate most if not all the jams.
you know its bad when 1 is not enough. |

C140,
Are you using more than one hopper extension? that will save you from having to feed so much. Talk to Andy. There are some tricks to make feeding and removing of sorted coins less frequent.
Do you have a video? and where are the pics of the 'bounty' |

what if you set up some sort of contraption that merges all the hoppers together at the top, and you feed into one huge hopper?
Then at the bottom, you set up chutes to direct all the accepts & all the rejects for the machines into two huge drums.
That way, all you have to do is manage the single hopper up top and change out two buckets on the bottom. |

But if you have a jam, everything stops. |

^true. But how often do you get 100% stoppage jams on a ryedale? You get the doubled pennies that slows down one machine. Or you get the bent penny that stops one ryedale.
Also, you could just cut the power to one machine and operate at a reduced pace. Either way that you feed/outfeed, a jam will slow you down.
This way, you could run more than 5 ryedales and just cut out the ones that jam, and you'll still be running pretty efficiently. |

Yeah, the get together kind of pumped me up! Also, after talking to Tadpole I felt completely inadequate......figured I better get going at it again. |

I do run 2 extension hoppers on all machines.
At one time I was thinking of making a dedicated sorting station with piping feeds to a central collection bucket for copper and zinc....a big main feed hopper, etc.....but in the end, I think I like the flexibility of individual machines with their own in/out feed....
I think it is easiest for set all the machines as zinc clense....run the entire batch this way....then rerun all the coppers/old wheats/foreign in a copper keep mode using all the machines.
Also, I never liked the idea of a cascade system where output from one machine serves as input to another.....
I think the single best thing for me it to just go with all large ammo can outfeed....this is really nice on the few cans I do have.
What I did do was have 5 machines running ....when one jamed....I just pulled it and put my 6th machine in place while I serviced the jamed machine.....so, i had 5 running pretty much full time.... |

C140,
you need an assistant. does the wife get involved? I wouldn't even think about running 5. maybe if I ran 2 long enough then running one more wouldn't be that bad.
I do want to ramp up my penny sorting. everyday that goes by there are less coppers to get out of circulation.
will make sorting in 5 years a slow process....maybe only yielding 5 percent.

I'm a solo operation....once in a great while the wife will come out in the garage and help out for a few minutes.....my kids are too small to enslave.....yet.....
I remember 2 years ago when I only had 1 machine....spending 10 - 12 hours sorting every weekend.....it was a real grind....but I added tons this way.
Like I said....3 machines is the sweet spot if you have loose coin....if you have to unwrap = a guy can out pace 1 machine but not 2.
Once the melt ban is lifted and copper is $4-$5'lb....it will only be a matter of a few months and us small guys will be out of the sorting business......brinks and other commercial operations will murder the % in circulation. I've seen this in S.W. Ontario with the .999 Ni Nickels....inside of 6 months it went from 25% to under 5%.
