If you've ever been to the US mint website it mentions that you can send mutilated coins to the Philadelphia mint for replacement. Well I thought this would be a neat way to get some new Lincolns. I rolled up 2 rolls of the skankiest pennies i could find and mailed them in. Two weeks later i received a letter telling me to call such and number because they needed my SSN to process any payment from the Govt. I Called and gave them the information. 3 weeks later i received a letter: The amount you forwarded is below the minimum levels the US Mint will accept for redemption. The levels are:
Pennies: minimum 1lb
Nickels: minimum 1lb
Dimes,quarters,halves,eisenhower $1 coins: Minimum 1lb
SBAnthony:minimum 1lb

NO MIXED COINS WILL BE ACCEPTED

any underweight coin will not be processed for redeption and all shipping expenses and risk involved with the mutilated coins shipped to the mint will be incurred by the shipper. If you wish your coins returned to you send a letter to
US Mint Philadelphia
cash division
151 n independence Mall East
19106

The coins will be held 6 weeks then destroyed

I thought about doing that once.
The website does mention the minimum weight. I just straighten them with a vice and send them through the coin counter or hide them in a roll.
They reimburse you by gov't check.

Beer is my currency.

They pay you based on the value of the metal and not by the face value. Also they make no distinction between zinc and copper pennies
