On three different occasions, I have run across a roll of dimes that has a penny in it. A penny that has been ground down on the sides to equal the size of a dime. I got these in fed rolls.

| I had a penny that was ground down and weighed very close to what a dime weighs not too long ago in a Machine rolled roll. I actually took it back to the coin machine as I didn't want it and was curious to see what would happen. Surprisingly it took it as a dime (this was actually one of my very very few dime dumps in a machine that I didn't get any dimes that registered as a penny) |

I had heard that one reason for the reduced size of a penny was when a dime was actually used for purchases (pay phones, laundromats, etc.) The penny was reduced in size to fool the pay phone/washing machine to accept it as a dime.
Do you remember what the date of the reduced sized penny was? |

| The size of the cents changed in 1856/1857. |

Looks quite intentional. I've heard of people using metal washers in pay phones instead of quarters, too.

| You really have to be hard up for 9 cents to beat down a penny rim like that. |

Maybe they do it just to see if they can pass it as a dime? Who knows....

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

Seen one just like that before. It got rejected out of the coin counter. Probably still in my other pants pocket too. |
