How do you collect
By type ? Complete sets ? Circulated ? Bu-Unc ? Graded ?
How do you store your collection ?
For fun ? For profit ?
Sell it ? Pass on thru generations ?
Biggest mistake coin collecting ?
What part of your collection are you the most proud of ?

I collect by type but have complete sets of the 1/10 Pt. Eagles 1/10 Au. Eagles 1oz. Ag. Eagles
Been lucky so far and have all Bu-Unc coins.
Storage is with 2x2's and Flips in the blue plastic Whitman boxs.
I collect for fun with no thoughts on selling.
However i would like it past down thru the generations. * With no woman or kids that idea seems far fetched.
Small mistakes nothing major.....Yet ( knock on wood )
Most proud of my eagle collections....Gota luv those PM's

interesting topic
ive collected coins for about 15 years now. mostly cents and nickels found in circulation. only within the last 5 years or so have i been branching out and buying some. my biggest problem is trying to find one set to specialize in.
ive always prefered circulated coins just because i like to get them out and look at and handle them - not just have them stored away somewhere.
my small collection is stored in mostly blue whitman folders. im only missing the 09-s vdb lincoln, 16-d mercury, 21-d walking liberty, and 32-s washington and i will have those sets completed. of course roosevelt dimes, franklins and kennedys were fairly easy, all in circulated grades.
my focus now is on full rim or better barber quarters. there is no hope of completing the set but im slowly piecing it together.
i collect mostly for fun but i profit when i can.
i also have more than 2500 different foreign coins. all in 2x2's organized by country and KM number. i had no intentions of the group getting that big but i really enjoy learning about other countries leaders, landmarks, animals, etc. through their coinage.
one thing i do not buy is us mint junk like proof sets, commerative halves, bags of state quarters, sacajaweas things like that. i have a complete set of $1 silver eagles but other than the bullion coins nothing they sell interests me. |

Im not up on the foreign coins so i hope i dont sound stupid when i ask what is KM number ?
I agree with you on the junk that the mint sells but i do have 1 proof set and its the year i was born.
One of the resons i like type collecting is i dont have those key dates draining my collecting fund and im sure you are aware some even in the AG-G condition command a high premium.
Been lucky so far that all are BU-UNC but i feel that some of the coins before the Barber issues like the seated liberty stuff or bust issues due to the price i will have to give a little on the grade......or save for a year-year and half for a purchase.
Im just starting in the Odd Denoms and thats pretty exciting.

I currently series collect: Washington quarters, Roosevelt dimes, Lincoln pennies and Jefferson nickels. I already have a complete set of Franklin halves, and have started on the Kennedies. I will probably type collect most of the rest of the coins the mints have made in the last 2 hundred years. I'm working on the silver eagle bullion series, but only have it less than half complete. The quality of my coins varies alot.
I started out as aloneibreak did by collecting circulation finds, mostly in the change that I get everyday. I have branched out somewhat into buying coins, but the coin dealer in the city that I reside really has a low quality poor selection to choose from. I used to live in a city that had a coin shop with alot of variety and quatlity. In some ways I have become fed up with the whole collecting concept and have moved more into just buying silver as cheap as I can get it.
I certainly don't see that appeal of the coins that the mint cranks out in the billions and then sells proof additions of the same coin to make even more profit from collecters. I don't think that they look any nicer than ordinary uncirculated coins. Then there is their silver proof versions sold at an even larger premium to collecters. Who are these collectors anyway. All of the mints designs are in my opinion getting ever uglier. Even the design on the Jefferson nickel and Washington eagle quarter looks uglier than the old ones. The 'modern look' is horrible, flat and cheesy looking. If we actually used coins like they did in the 1920's all of our coins would be smooth metal disks by now. I will admit that I do collect the state quarters, but only from circulation, and I certainly wouldn't pay even more for the ugly things from the mint or anyone else.
My collection is stored in typical whitman folders as well. I also have other brands of folders and 2x2's.
I collect for fun. Not to be confused with hoarding here. If anyone collects for profit by buying and selling his coins from a dealer is getting hit as badly as if he was trying to profit by buying and selling used cars from car dealers.
I wasn't planning on selling it, but may sell parts of it as my taste and income level changes.
I have made the mistake of buying a bunch of foreign coins that I don't know what to do with. I will probably get another 2x2 box and organize them according to country and what ever that KM number is. Did anyone every hear of Newfoundland coins?
I think that I'm most proud of my Bu Franklin half collection. I probably overpaid for it, but in that case note the used car section of this post. One thing that I have discovered colllecting is that collections can vary alot. You are the collecter and you define your collection.

to learn something you must ask - so no question is stupid. KM number is just the identifying number of a coin according to The Standard Catalog Of World Coins by Chester Krause and Clifford Mishler - therefore the K and M. that way you can differentiate between different compositions of the same design and the range of years it was minted and so on. Theyre the only ones that have really cataloged everything so thats the standard everyone goes by.

How do you collect
I collect primarily wheaties and silver coins, both Canadian and US
I only pick up what is in circulation, I work in a cash office of a retail store so it is very handy.
In regular rolls
For fun only
I sell something only if I think I can get atleast 20X wht I picked it up for, so it is rare.
Biggest mistake coin collecting? - Selling my Grandpa's collection when I was a stoopid teenager
What part of your collection are you the most proud of ? - I'm just glad I am able to gather as many silver pieces as I can

I basically collect all US coins. I put them in Whitman Classic Albums. I have 96 such albums, every denomination and most are full. I usually put the highest grade in set #1 of each type. Example Mercury Dime set #1 is all MS grades and complete. Then progressively lower grades in the next sets. Then all extras go into 2x2's and put in order in large red Whitman 2 row cardboard boxes made for 2x2's. No particular method of which Albums to use the most of. For example 3 Indian Head Albums but 10 Lincoln Cent Albums. The most valuable Albums or miscellaneous coins are in 5 different safe deposit boxes. This is all for fun with absolutely no interest in selling so value is not important. Although every few years I do take an approximate inventory value wise. This takes so long I always say never again but then I still do it again anyway. I've been collecting since my first coin given to me by my Dad in 1943 and although a young kid in school at the time I saved even that one. Still have it too.
