when buying bags of 90% coins, dealers sometimes charge a premium for bags of all halves.
is this premium justified? do the halves you get tend to be less circulated then quarters or dimes?
peronsally I don't like dimes because my fingers are too small.
but quarters would be OK I guess.
lets say I rolled the coins. would you pay more or less for a roll of silver quarters vs. a roll of silver halves, both $10 face.

Yes. '64 halves tend to be lightly circulated becasue so many people hoarded those early on. |

| I dont think halves should have a premium on them period. They're all junk for a reason. |

thee guy I get halves from tends to give me about 40% walkers and 40% bens. I have a hope of getting more than the junk price for those.
i guess with quarters you can get standing liberty's but not so many.
so i don't like the premium but I try to convince myself its worth it.
its also a bit more convenient to handle larger coins. |

Would you be willing to pay the same price for "slicks" as you would for EF - BU coins?
Junk silver are coins that are valued primarily for bullion purposes with some numismatic premium. quarters & dimes tend to be more circulated, therefore having more wear, therefore are generally priced lower.
Dont get me wrong, mercury dimes are my favorite junk silver coin. Halves are damn ugly, but they are worth more, and for a good reason (walkers are nice though). |

i guess if I got a bag of slicks I would be inappropriate languageed but I wouldn't feel cheated.
i like junk bags because its like getting something for nothing. I found an 1892-S barber half recently (worth about $250 in G-4). And I guess I like halves. I like the design of the Ben Franklin, probably because they made it for so few years it just "looks" rare. lol.
You get a lot of 64 kennedy's in those bags in AU or even BU condition, but those are very common and I can't see them ever being worth more than melt.
I guess what I am asking is do you have as much a potential for numismatically desirable coins in a bag of quarters or dimes as you do halves?
to put numbers to it, right now Tulving is asking a .40/ounce premium for halves. for a 715 ounce bag, that's $286! Now, a bag will give you 100 rolls. If 40% are walkers, that's 40 rolls. If you figure those rolls of walkers are worth at least $7.15 more than a roll of JFK's, then you are ahead of the game (not to mention the franklins). So that's why I like halves.
3 theories I have heard supporting the premiums are: 1. halves circulated less and therefore have marginally more silver - I think this is a stretch and relevant only if you are going to melt them. 2. halves circulated less and therefore are in better condition - this is probably true. 3. smaller denominations circulated more and as a result older coins were culled a long time ago. I suspect this is true but am not certain. |

FWIW, APMEX does the same thing.
$500 (Halves) Face Value 90% Silver Bags - (Mixed Halves) (1,000 Count Mixed Dates & Mint Marks) (Average Circulated) Sell Price $5,779.97
$500 Face Value) Bag of 90% Silver Coins Sell Price $5,422.72
As far as numismatically desirable:
Roosevelt dimes tend not to be worn much, but doesnt realy have numismatic value. Washington quarters tend to be heavily worn outside of the '60s. Only a couple years with numis. value. Merc dimes & standing quarters tend to have a numis. prem & have rare years. But they also tend to be heavily worn. barber dimes & quarters are great, even in G-4 condition (if you can get them). |

about what I expected. barbers are rare with halves, but I like my percentages. |

Hi there-
Different strokes for different folks. I like dimes the best!

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.
I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |

i meant to say my fingers are too big.
wags - why do you prefer the dimes? they do have the advantage of being more divisible. |

| I like halfs because of the size/weight ratio. I just like all junk though in general! |
As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?
