This was linked over at coinflation. I am actually surprised this is the first time I heard about something like this.

Anyone know if the amount of copper in RG-6 coaxial cable (the stuff that brings cable tv into your house) is worth the effort to strip and cash in?

Shocking! But if you think about it.... those huge power lines are like rolls of copper pennies stretching for miles.
If the cable wire is still in good conditon, I guess it would be worth more as wire. Stripping it could be a profitable hobby for someone.

The copper in RG6 is so thin (14-22ga) that it would be more worthwhile selling the RG6 instead of just the copper. At least at current Cu pricing

I am sure you are right about good RG6. I was thinking about back when I worked as a tech for Comcast Cable. I pulled the old stuff down from inside and outside of houses and replaced it with new. This is squirrel chewed, old, and broken coax. I used to throw literally miles of it away a week. I still have friends who do that job...I am sure I could persuade them to dump some of the old stuff off in front of my garage if I thought it would be worthwhile.

If I could get that much for free I think I would make a hobby of stripping it and rolling it in a ball on those long cold winter nights.

These people that get hurt or killed trying to steal wire deserve what ever happens to them IMO. I also thought it was funny that the deputy's name was Cooper. I can hear it now "This is Cooper with another Copper theft".

It's even funnier if the deputy's name comes from German heritage as opposed to English. The name Cooper means he who makes barrels or wine casks in English, but the German name Cooper comes from Kupfer, which means coppersmith.
Alright, maybe it is only funny to me.
