Given that the title of the article is "Low Average Mortgage Rates Released Weekly by Freddie Mac Don't Apply to All", I'm surprised that the author even needs to explain what "average" means in the arithmetic sense. I think I learned that in 4th grade. 
He goes on to explain why having a lower mortgage rate is a good thing.
If home buyers and refinancers are having trouble with this concept, is it any wonder there was a meltdown? I'm not shocked that a few people don't understand the ins and outs of financing a house. I'm just shocked that it seems to be so widespread.
