Earlier this week I was cycling some coins through pop machines looking for american coins etc and I found a 1967 centennial mackerel dime just as I was starting! This was my first time finding centennial silver in circulation (the dimes and quarters can be .800 or .500 Ag) and I wasn't even looking for it. A lot of vending machines will give you a different coin than you put in when you press the change return, but I wouldn't have thought a modern machine would have accepted a silver coin in the first place. I used to do this with nickels a lot but I've just been getting back into it recently.

I've found that certain machines will return the money in the same form you put it in (ie put in 20 dimes, get back 20 dimes) but others will give it back in larger denominations, meaning you have to press the return more frequently if you want the same type of coin back. Also, certain machines have a corner off to the side of the change return where coins sometimes get stuck, so occasionally a nickel or quarter will dislodge a $1 or $2 coin from this otherwise unreachable area.

At some point I wouldn't mind buying some vending machines of my own to have direct access to the supply of coins. It should be possible to calibrate a machine to accept silver coins in addition to the regular ones, right?

Nobody have any thoughts on coins and vending machines? Maybe I should have put this in general discussion instead.

I used to try that. I just always get scared that the machine will eat my coin. I haven't done it in years.

Better to own the machine or process the coin that comes from it ;-)

I've started following prices for vending machines on craigslist and kijiji just to get an idea of the market, although I'm not really in a position to buy right now. Reasonably current-looking pop machines sometimes go for as low as C$350-500 and snack machines seem to start closer to $800-1000.

I once put a Kennedy half in a vending machine. The machine ate the coin. Even the self check out machines at the grocery store do not take half dollars. They immediately reject them. I have to see if the new dollar coins get rejected too, heh.

Vending is a business. It looks easy, but the big thing to it is real estate. You have to work to get your machines placed where they will be used. And then you have to service them and rotate stock.

It can be a good business, but, just like any business, it takes a lot of work to make it worthwhile.
