I'm not sure if there is any pros on here but I picked up a shield nickel today from 1866. I also picked up a 2003 blue book on the same trip and it says that it should have rays. There is no option for 1866 not to have rays.
But my 1866 nickel looks like it never had rays in the first place. Its not mint, I think its VG, but I would imagine that if it had rays I would see something there. You can cleary see the stars and most of the details on that side. So to sum it up, has anyone heard or seen a 1866 nickel with NO rays?
I do not have access to a camera currently, so I can not post a picture right now. I checked and it is not a re-punch either. There were 1867 no-rays as far I can see, but nothing about 1866.

Yeah you are correct...the 1866 were with rays, while 1867 had both with and without rays versions. I'm not really sure what to make of this.
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.
Always a possibility....or might be an authentic coin that was altered in a way that makes it very hard or impossible to determine that the rays were removed.
Or could be a pattern coin that slipped into circulation and will make Robarons a nice little profit.

Do you know of where I might find pictures of the pattern coins? I looked and it could be a 1868, but the top right of the number does not connect to form a '8'. I checked ebay and the actual 8 on the coin itself and most do not match. I will say the percieved '6' is a bit more fat than the other six on the coin and other six's online.
As I said above its pretty darn worn so if it was 1868 you would think it would have worn into an 8 pretty good. Because its such a odd coin I will try for pictures tonight.
