Yes. Probably helped because of the official MS grading, but cost roughly $19, so seriously cut the profit. It was a find.

Your auction says that it is 'copper'
Zinc is not in the dropdown as an option, copper was he closest I could get. I suppose I could have used "other" or something, but I didn't think of that.(Or even if "other" is there?) |

How did you guys go about finding those DD's? Do you look through each cent wih a loupe? I believe theres a list somewhere with the DD dates, so do you just look for those?
If so, it must take forever and you guys deserve to find such treasures!

once you see one or 2 you can kinda tell without a loupe. I almost threw this one in but i noticed it had beefyness So i checked it out with my loupe. I just scan every coin from 1993-2008 for Wide AM and i look for close AM on the 1992's I check 97 and 84's for doubled earlobe. I look at 83's for DDR. 1994 for double column. and then also I check small date zinc 1982 for DDR and i keep all Small dated Zinc 1982's and all AU-Bu Zinclons that are problem free. Obviously i dont do it for the money but it sure is cool when you find something. As for the coppers i run everything thru the ryedale i just sort the coppers for the wheats and pull the s minted coins. I also found a 1919 wheat in my zinc pile and an Indian head! So i think its worth it to look at my Zinc pile. Besides i have to hand roll the rejects anyway
I hope that wasnt to long and drawn out |

I dont look through each cent. I look for these variations:
1996, 1998-2000 Wide America 1992, 1992D Close America 1995 Doubled Die Obverse 1984 Doubled Ear 1983 Doubled Die Reverse 1972 Doubled Die Obverse
There are a couple of others too. I found this site to be extremely helpful in knowing what varities to look for:

Once I moved from only looking for 3 or 4 variations to all the ones I do now, my time to hand sort a box nearly doubled.

Thanks for the website. I have always tried to find DD's but I never had a picture or a reference cent to tell if its really DD or not. I always tried to look for poor man's 1955's but never had any luck.
How many have you guys found total so far? |

I have found 1 1999 wide am (worth $300) 6 2000 Wide am a nickel with a cud and a 1983 penny with major die cracks At first I thought I would never find any errors, but then a guy told me to just think "Why not me", and I have had great luck, especially since I have only gone through about 12 boxes. |

Wow, just realized this thread was here and want to beat my head on the wall for not realizing what to look at when looking for 1995 DDO pennies. For some reason, I was always looking at doubling at the date only to verify the DDO, sigh. Anyways, it inspired me to keep flipping those coins over and looking for wide AM and such and found my first one!!! a 1998 wide Am in BU condition yipee!! Great thread with awesome info.

Agreed, I always looked at the date also. Never thought to look at Liberty I bet I do now! As a hand sorter with aging eyes, I look at all through a magnifying glass anyway. |
Are you throwing that out? |

Short lists of possible error coins makes it better for those that look at all of them. Are you aware of the 82 Double Die as an example? If you are looking through pennies I suggest you get familiar with You must be logged in to see this link. web site. Many, many error coins and some worth a lot of money. |

It seems that I must be pretty lucky today! I was sorting and was going to toss this odd lookin' 1992-d cent in the zinc bin until I checked it under a loupe to see a very light doubling of the 1992 and the D. Nothing else really looks like it doubled. This got me more excited than my first Indian! |

would you mind posting a picture? It could be machine doubling or a new die variety |

I think it is a machine doubling. Not too crazy of an error, but just enough to raise a couple eyebrows. I have a camera date setup later this week to take a picture of my other odd shield nickel, I will get a picture of this one then. |

The one really nice thing about the You must be logged in to see this link. web site is the people there are always willing to answer any question about those coins. The person on that web site has taken virtually thousands of photos of Lincolns Cents. The only thing to remember if you do go there is the person that runs that web site has so many and has seen so many that his ideas of prices is a little on the pessimistic side. They also buy and sell there now. |

There is a really cool book that helps you in knowing what to search for when looking through your coins.
I just recently purchased the Second Edition of the book. My book of their first edition is well worn.
Here is a link that talks about the first book:
