I'll miss General Motors. They made some nice cars. Sure, they had some duds. The Corvair and the Chevette come to mind, but they made some really nice cars too. Has anyone driven the Buick Lucerne? My sister has one, top of the line model. Apparently it is (was?) built on the Cadillac chassis. Power like you wouldn't believe, it will leave any piece of sxxt Lexus eating dust. And I'm sure that ten years down the road, it will still be a car you wouldn't mind being seen in, unlike an old Lexus, which turns to sxxt after the payments are done.
Bye, bye GM. It was good knowing you. Thankyou for the Camaros', Nova's, Vette's (always wanted one of those). Thank you for the affordable, dependable trucks. Thanks for the Chevy small block, a testament to the genius of American engineering.

So. Now Lord God Almighty, his high holiness Mr Obama has told the head of an American Institution, with 100 years of history to hit the bricks. Grand. Just F'ing grand.

I would have rather seen them go belly up, and be sold off in pieces rather than what's about to happen. Giggles (BHO) is going to speak tomorrow of his plans for the company. Surely a man who has never ran so much as a hotdog cart will have brillian insight on what is needed to save GM.
Expect to hear of plans for cars that run on Hope and Change, or maybe even pedal power.
I know that GM has had problems for years -- paying WAY TOO MUCH for labor, benefits, retirement etc. But when a presidential administration can wield the clout to tell a CEO that he's done....
They should have just filed bankruptcy. Instead they took the poison pill. Next thing you know they'll be building Yugo's that noone wants, that run on sawgrass or hemp oil. You get the picture.
So....why haven't any of the head Wall Street-Banksters been told that they are "done"? Hmmmm?
We're watching a Marxist revolution right in front of our eyes.

People are sick of the bailouts. No matter whether we like it or not. You can't have the banking system fail. If it fails, then everything other business is gone too for the most part.
The Auto industry isn't required like the banking system is required for the economy. I think they should have been forced into chapter 11, but the prior administration lack any kind of balls. They just wanted to push the issue forward enough for the next guy. Bush could have just let them fail last fall, but he didn't have the balls. Obama for all his stupid plans looks like he might have some balls. We will see if he has them or if he is just talking about having them.
I still want to know why in the heck $700 wasn't used to buy toxic assets of the banks that could be saved vs. wasted like it was. Now they want to buy the toxic assets after wasting so much money. The government is run by idiots. It is our fault for electing them!

yeah, the unions and the healthcare industry had nothing to do with GM's demise (sarcasm).
How long until we hear Obama trot out government-monopoly healthcare and cite GM's competitiveness as a reason in favor of a lack of freedom? |

The bankers run the government so they get bailed and the auto companies do not.
But in any case, letting the auto companies go BK is the right thing to do. The bad unservicable debt will get flushed, shareholders will get burned, pensioners will likely get burned, and bond holders will likely get burned. A lot of people will get hurt, but it makes more sense than using tax dollars and printed money to paper over the problems of private companies.
The car companies will reemerge as viable companies. That is what the BK system is designed to do. The alternative is to keep a bunch of companies on life support that need a constant stream of free money to stay alive.
Now if Obama just had the guts to do the same for/to the financial institutions, we might actually have a chance at recovering...

Horgad,
You are right in a way about the bankers. They do control the economy, which controls the people. I am not saying we had to keep the shareholder in tact, but we had to keep some banks open and keep depositors whole. Otherwise, the whole system goes bye bye. Now some people are in favor of that too, but I think the masses would rather spend the money than go through that pain... if they could understand the totally affect of a system wide financial failure of all (most) the major banks.
The system is what it is... unless you are going to change the system----the banks have to stay afloat/open. Shareholders/bond holders could have been wiped out no problem, but depositors need to be saved. Remember most of the money supply is built off banking reserves. No money, then big problems for the economy built on debt.

| I don't know if any of you listen to talk radio, but they were saying that all of GM's trucks and SUVs are basically money-makers, but that they are forced to make a bunch of other crappy non-profitable cars in order to satisfy CAFFE standards put in place by the libs/enviros. The free-market of automobiles was working fine until Washington got involved. GM makes good trucks, the Japanese make good sedans, but the government had to impose emission standards and ruin the proper distribution of labor. If GM dropped their small cars, they would be profitable, but they can't because they have to meet a fleet-average MPG. |

AG,
That is how the liberals ruin this country. They do stuff like that and then think...why harm does it cause to make someone produce a bunch of unprofitable cars.
You notice how they want to say it is SUV/Trucks that killed them too and not the union cost structure. I would guess that before the gas price went up... SUV/Trucks were flying off the lots. Hey...People were buying them. It was the price of gas that killed the dying beast, but it was the unions that cause it to be dying in the first place.
Without the unions, then I would guess they would be profitable still and ok financially. They could have cut back production with dropping sales to match cost and revenue. The liberals don't want that.. they want to have capitalism with a lot of government rules, which stop capitalism from working.

It seems that Washington and those CAFE standards favor car companines that just make small cars. Although that maybe true, GM didnt have to make crappy small cars. If Toyota, etc. can make good cars GM should be able too. Having one crappy division doesnt bode well for the whole brand name.
I live in Michigan and everyone here is scared outta their minds. They been spoiled for years by GM pay and the unions. Alot of these people are what I wouldn't call 'good workers' either. Theres also a buttload of retirees in my area wondering whos going to pay for their full dental, vision, etc. I am worried to see the already dead economic environment go rotten here. |

| Yeah, its actually not the SUVs and trucks is the real part that makes me mad. Those are the models that are profitable, but they can't make as many as they want to because they are not allowed by the government! Gah! Everyone remember: GM WAS FORCED TO FAIL BY THE GOVERNMENT. |
