bought a small bag of halves from a dealer. Paid 10.35x face. Lemon Jr. (6 yrs old) found this one:

1892-S. I'm guessing its a little better than Good-4. You can read "E. Pluribus Unum" fairly well, althought there are 2 nicks - 1 in the neck and 1 below the chin. At G-4, value is $260. Would appreciate others thoughts on grade and value.

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X

Per Photograde; G-4
For VG-8 you have to be able to see 3 letters in "liberty" even if its 2 wholes and two half letters.
F needs a full "liberty"

I was going to guess G-6 to VG-8 upon first look, but fb101 is right about the letters in Liberty. Either way, that's a heck of a find for 10.35x face. Even if it was a common date, he would have done well.

what do you think about the nicks at the neck and chin? is that to be expected, or would it subtract value? anyway, I have no plans to sell it - has a lot of sentimental value all of a sudden. its just with a coin this rare small differences in condition affect the value significantly.

Nice find, jr.! Quite a start! Reminds me of when I would look through my Dad's change and pull out all the shiny ones...

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

Worst case scenario you would have a net G-4 coin with G-6 to VG-8 details. I look it at this way...just a tad over 1 million were minted, it's from the 1st year of a popular series, and who knows how many are left after the mass coin meltings that have happened over the years. If you would like, I could look at my current Coin Prices magazine and compare it to some from years past to see how the value of this is trending. If I had it, I would probably sell it for a profit and acquire more silver or gold. Let me know if you want me to look up past values.

thanks guys.

you confirmed what i was thinking - probably G-4 with the possibility of 6 or 8. I saw a G-4 not as nice as this sell on ebay recently for $235 so I have an idea of value. I'm an amateur when it comes to grading so you all have been a big help.

if I had found this, I wouldn't hesitate to sell and turn it into more silver or gold. but its got a lot of sentimental value now because my 6-year old found it.

copper cents at 1.3X

Understandable....and since your 6-year old son found it, let's go with G-6 as the grade.
