As you all know one way to tell an 1982 copper penny from a 1982 zinc penny is to drop it and listen to the sound. The copper pennies have a clear high pitch ring to them and the zincs just kind of go clunk. So, what is it about copper pennies that lets them sing the way they do?

It's cause they are made of "real" metal.. like silver coins.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

Anyone have a... more scientific... answer? ;)

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Aren't bells and musical instruments made of brass or bronze, ie, mostly copper? I guess it has better "vibration properties." Thats only barely more ... uh, "scientific."

It's Magic?
Probably has something to do with the resonant frequency of the crystalline structure of the element or alloy used.

There's profit if you melt things!!

90% halves have a very distinct sound, and the 40% ones less so, but still noticeable. Copper I can't tell the difference. I weight my 82's.

I cannot sort 82's by sound, but I can tell by sound when there is canadian in the bunch. They make a distinctive sound when they land on a pile of LMC.

The singing sound...Way back when slot machine had real coins fall out on the few occasions I'd go to Vegas I'd love to play the half machines. I could always tell when a silver or silver clad dropped out into the hopper. I love that sound!

I hand sort my pennies, so telling the 82's apart has become an art form. First of all, 95% of the time I can tell just by looking at it if its zinc or not. The zinc coins have a copper plated effect look to them. Secondly, if I cannot tell by looking a quick drop on the end table lets me know right away. I'm thinking the densities may play a part in it, but I like the real metal approach, just not sure why that is just yet, it has me thinking anyways!!

I hand sort my pennies also. I just flick the 82's up in the air with my thumb. The coppers make a ringing sound, the zincs nothing.

This is actually how I sort all of them, I unroll a box, throw it up in the air, I pick up the ones that sound better...

Anyone want to but pennies from me, I run 98.5% copper in my area of the country... I have lots...

Actually my ears probably too trashed to tell the difference but I will check it out next time. Thanks.

Getting a Ryedale would be the easiest way to tell the coins apart

Not doing enough volume to justify the cost yet. So, I guess I'll just have to keep dropping the 82's listen to them sing.
