Found a blank planchet (zinc) in a brinks box. I’ve sorted about 15 boxes of cents and this is the first blank I have ever seen.

How many of you have found one of these?

That would be a nice addition to my ever-growing error collection...

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

I have hand sorted about 300 boxes of cents since the beginning of the year and I have found 4. So look at the average of about 1 in every 75 boxes. Seems pretty rare. Have a great day.

There is one small problem. With the economy being what it is lately, people have been inserting blank pieces of metal in with rolls when taking to a bank or store. Many have been produced in factories that make washers. They can be of all types of metals. This is one of the reasons so many banks are starting a new policy of not using coin counters but instead sending out rolls to be opened and counted by an outside agency. This of course has a charge for that service.
Between short rolls, those with a coin missing, and the blanks from a washer company, banks are becoming leary of people with rolls.

The one major difference is the raised edge of a genuine blank planchet. I cant see a company machining a slug with a raised edge just to get a coin, not worth the time or money. Specially a penny.

Found one this year out of about 110,000 pennies searched.

I agree with shakenbake....I dont see companies taking the time to do this with pennies. I could see them doing it with quarters, halves, or even small dollar coins but pennies dont seem like they are worth the trouble.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Banks in my area, some take ONLY loose change that's gone through their coin counter, and some take only rolled coins. I'm not at all sure what the verification policy is for rolled coins, if they send them out to be counted or what, but I've never had an issue or credit/debit made afterwords to adjust the original deposit receipt. I don't really like the loose change counters. Are thy accurate? Can they be trusted? Who manufacturer's them? Sometimes I have coins rejected, put them back in, and they're accepted the second time. Not exactly perfect.

I've sorted about $3000 face in pennies, and I've turned up 3 planchets so far. So, not very common. I think they're neat... you can buy them for a dollar or so, but like common Indian Head Cents, it's so much cooler when you find one in a roll.

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?

I've found one. This is from about 150 lbs of copper. I lost track of how much was sorted. Could probably figure it out, but it's late and my meds are kicking in!

Are you throwing that out?

Obviously you have a job. If you were without a job for any length of time money of any kind is important. And a factory that makes washers, slugs of many different types, has the machinery to make anything in massive quantities. Penny slugs are becoming a constant appearance in rolls. One or two per roll, in hundreds and hundreds of rolls compounds with time. Same with Nickels and Dimes. If quarters and halves were done this way, the Federal people would really start investigating but as most know, for a penny? Not hardly.

Hi all

I've found 2 in my sorting so far. From what I've seen, if you have one or two, not really a big deal, but if you keep finding them and saving them until you have a half roll or roll, you can prolly get $50-$100 for the collection. JMO

wags

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win.
