Been sorting for nearly 3 months and finally got the Ryedale to 7 digits on the counter. On top of that, picked up several CWR's in the notorious pink paper and finally had 100% sort into the CU bucket!
Now, if I could finally join the 1 ton club(75% complete)...

I could set both of you guys up real easy.. you could just buy a ton.

Nope, no Coinstar machines for us serious sorters.. the cost of cashing them in that way is more than the profit from sorting out the coppers.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

My Ryedale odometer quit at 2.5 million about two weeks ago. Since then I have sorted a couple hundred thousand more. I am really disappointed I was well on my way to 3 million and when I got there I was going to post a picture. Now I won't know how many I have sorted. Other than that the Ryedale still works great with almost 3 million coins through it. I can get a new counter but it was kind of fun to see how high I could get this one to go.

No coinstar for me as well.

Hoard- I'm almost at ton #1 after 3 months with the Rye- just something fun for late Friday's after work. If I simply bought a sorted ton then I'd lose all the fun like the 2 IH's I found Friday night(13th).
Actually, I trade several tons of CU at a time with Nymex futures which are 12.5 tones/contract....Now if I could only demand physical delivery of 100 contracts in un-searched CU pennies!!!
Cheers

Just to clarify; what are your objections to the coinstars?

1. Is it the 5% to 8% charge? My bank waives that charge if you have an account.

2. Or is it that the machines automatically short you? If that is the case how much do you think it shorts you?

Wouldn't rolling the coins be the only other alternative? I'm sure you guys are faster, but I think it takes at least 20 minutes for me to count and roll 600 pennies.

Actually for those of you sort 50,000+ coins a week what is your process for dumping? I usually sort through a little over box a week so my dumps average about $20. (small potatoes, I know)

Is the 8.9% charge a state tax or is it just what banks typically charge? Do the banks charge you even if you have an account?

The charge of 5-9% is what Coinstar deducts as its fee from your dump. Kind of like a stupid tax on people who see coin as worthless and can't wait to get some real money from it. For us, the fee cuts into our profit too much.

A Bank Looby Machine that accepts coin and is free of fees is more like a God Send. I wish I had one of those! I have to roll all my coin. Try stacking the coins 10 high, or weigh the zincs to speed up rolling. There are also CS-10s that fill rolls fast.

Some of us are spoiled and have a bank or banks that accept loose returns. Makes things easier. I return loose in bags that are placed in stackable boxes, then I dolly them in. Takes some looking around to find a bank like this and some people do not have any near them. If you find one, definitely "grease" the wheels with chocolate. It can't hurt. Look around for one of these banks, you never know....

I place orders to buy Brinks boxes and occasionally hunt for CWR's. After the sort, I load up the zincolns and wheel them in to one of several nearby branches of a Loomis affiliated bank and dump off several coin lok bags at a time. That way I don't dump zinc directly into the feedstock. When dumping more than about 60,000 slugs at a time(10 bags) I'll spread them between multiple branches. No need to worry about a free lobby machine that counts a few hundred/minute while the branch manager sweats and the teller girls have to exchange out and wheel those loaded coin tubs. Been there, done that- answering too many questions, getting that "you must be up to something no good" look, and generally wasting too much time. Cart wheeled in to the branch full then wheeled out empty in less than 5 minutes is the goal.

Finally joined the not so exclusive "one ton of copper penny hoarded" club after nearly 4 months and approx 20% yield in Texas. Found a few error coins, 2 nice IH's, 2500+ wheats, and the shiniest penny I've ever seen came through just this last Friday night as the ton was met- a 2001 S proof. It was the best find of all (special meaning for an 8 yr old running around my house)

Funny though it took 4 months of Ryedale fun to sort 1.5 million pennies on Friday nights in order to preserve one ton of copper yet I'll trade 250 tons of copper at the click of a mouse on any given day (in and out, long and short)

The only reason we are faster is 'cause we cheat. It's not the only alternative, but it depends on your banks. I have some that will take them loose in bags and other banks that require them to be rolled. With all 3 automatic rolling machines operating at once I can roll 32 rolls a minute.. beats the heck out of rolling by hand. I prefer turning them in loose in the bags though. The 2 big machines each count 4,000 coins per minute, and the 3 little machines each count 1800 coins per minute. It doesn't take long to fill up a few bags.

Congrats on joining the 1 ton club Jon!

now if I could just find a bank that will take bagged coins I would take my penny sorting to a new level. I try to stay between 300 and 400 dollars a week in zinc dumps. Would love to move up to 1500-2000 dollars a week in zinc dumps.

When you start dumping that level it doesn't take them long to cut you off.. lol. Been there, done that. I spread my dumps around a lot more now.

Pennyworth.. 1 ton of copper cents is approximately $3,000 face. Doesn't take up nearly as much space as you might think.

I've only been sorting the coppers for about 2 months now. I was primarily searching halves, dimes and nickels for silver. I use to search the cents only for wheats. I figure I should keep the coppers too. I sort by hand, as I don't have a Ryedale machine. I have $57 in coppers rolled and boxes and half full of a 5 gallon bucket. I can barely move it, let alone pick it up. LOL I am female btw, so I guess I'm going to have to use a hand dollie out to move this bucket soon. LOL

Welcome to the forum Pennyworth. You are cranking out some volume to get that much in only 2 months. I have overfilled buckets a few times myself. Those 33 gallon tubs are really hard to move once you fill them. Best way to do it if you don't have a dolly handy is to pull out about a gallon or so at a time and put it in a bag to move them to where you want them. For calculations, a gallon is approximately $50 face and weighs about 33 and 1/3rd pounds. So your 2 and half gallons weighs about 83 pounds.

Generally, they do. However, if you give them too much action the local branch will either cut you off or try to institute a fee.

my experience is if you go above 6-8 bags a week or a visit you are pushing it. remember, some poor gal has to lift those and process them etc.

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X
