I just got started sorting cu's from zn. I've sorted maybe $20 worth. I had the zincs in one place and the coppers in another. I came home from work today with a handful of coppers to add to the jar and, and... they're gone! The wife took all the change. The good and the bad to the local Coinstar machine, I hate those machines. What a ripoff. So I call her cell. She answers and I can hear the sound of pennies being dumped in the machine. "Noooo...", I say, "don't dump them". "What do you want them for they're just pennies", she says. "No", I say, "some are more then just pennies, some are worth more then just a penny". "But I have them all mixed up together it would be too much work to sort through them all", she says. As I hear the sound of more pennies being dumped. "I sorted them once I can sort them again", I say. She says, "What? I can't hear you this machine making too much noise". In the back ground I can hear more pennies being dumped.

| Ouch man, I can just hear your pain. Having it happen to you is one thing but actually hearing them clink down a machine is a whole different thing. |

Never happened to me. She doesn't mess with any of my "toys". My toys include my coins as well. Sucks that you had to listen to them go down the drain....

Man, and I bet you are doing this to enhance your families security too. Better have a serious talk with the wife about listening to you and about coins. Most of us have had to sit down and do some family education about money, coins etc.
If your wife does not want to learn about coins and why they have value then be sure and tell your wife that if anything ever happens to you to come to realcent and message an active moderator or admin about dealing with your coin collection - then follow their instructions exactly. Any of the leadership here will make sure you get full value for your copper, silver etc. Would be a shame to have a repeat of today on a larger scale!
If she still does not listen, then at least you did your job and it becomes 100% her problem. |

No offense, but do you ever talk with your wife?
She appeared to have no idea what you were doing. That's never a good thing.

Well, how to answer this let me think. My wife and I got married late in life and we were both set in our ways about things and have butted heads from time to time. For example, for most of my adult life I have kept a jar one size or another to deposit spare change in when I empty my pockets at the end of the day, as I'm sure many of you have. After a few months the jar would start to fill up and I would think about what kind of new toy or treat I could buy for myself when I finally counted it up. To me this has always been a kind of very painless savings. I never missed the few nickels, dimes or quarters that I put in day by day and that often added up to several hundred dollars when counted up after a few months.
My wife on the other hand, has always thought that this was a very silly practice. "Just spend it", she would say, "its just money". Try as I might I could never get her to come around to my way of thinking. At least the part about letting the jar fill up for awhile. No sooner than I have an inch of change on the bottom of my current 1 gal. mayonnaise jar then she was reaching in for a handful of change before going to work in the morning. Or, as happened today, she would take the whole thing to the Coinstar machine and cash it in getting little more then $10 or $15 at a time.
So, I made it a point when I started sorting pennies to keep the good ones in a separate container. She saw me putting some pennies the other day and asked me about it. I told her that they were the older ones and that I wanted to keep them separate. I didn't go into the long explanation about the failing economy and copper pennies being worth more than the zinc pennies. I was saving that for when I got into it more seriously. I did give her the long explanation today when she came home. I think she understands but I won't know for sure until the next time I go to put some pennies in the jar. |

I bet she didn't even give you back the 91% of your hoard she netted from Coinstar.
Thanks for sharing the story.. it made many of us laugh, and then cry. I have a solution. Go down to the hardware store and buy one of those plastic storage tubs and a padlock or 2. Put your penny or other coin containers in the tub and padlock it when you are done processing for the day. This way no more of your coins can accidently fall into a Coinstar machine. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

That explanation makes sense. I have some friends that are very happily married, but they also married late in life and they just have their own "ways" that they developed over the years.
Hoard's idea is perfect though. Should be a minor investment for the "lock box" and then you don't have to worry :) |

My wife tells me the same thing, they are JUST coins. She tells me all my copper, and even all my Morgans, Walkers, Peace dollars, Indian heads, and Wheats are going to the bank when I cash it in for the final time. She doesn't want to bother with setting up an auction, or even taking them to a coin dealer. She thinks my coin collecting hobby is stupid. So keep your eyes out for several tons of copper and a lot silver when I check out.
It is a good idea to keep them in a separate place though, I do have all my coins in the basement and she does leave them alone. |

NDFARMER...Let us know when that happens please, and I will make a special trip to ND to pay my last respects and more importantly to pick up coins at all the banks in the area.
orionstarman: I agree with barrytrot, that there appears to be a lack of communication. Get her involved in splitting them out, even if it is just in pocket change.

Guess I am lucky. My girlfriend actually helps with the sorting.. breaking them out of rolls, running one of the rolling machines to roll up the zinc rejects, and even refining the bulk copper to remove the uglies.
It could have been much worse orionstarman.. you only had $20 sorted.. one of my customers had 20 bags of copper that his now ex-wife lugged down to the coinstar and cashed in. |

What's the deal with coinstar? You lose too much. Do people today just not care? If you take a few minutes to roll them up and take the to the bank, it ends up being faster than the coinstar machine! Coinstar is soooooooo slow and then rips you off.
I do feel bad for you man, but any one stupid enough to use a coinstar...... You REALLY need to teach her. I've heard what people do is save up their change their whole life then retire on it. No interest, but atleast you wont be tempted to spend loose change.
btw, I save all my change up and take it back to the bank in bags, forget the rolls. |

| Coinstar isn't so bad if they have the "Amazon" option. I've used that a few times. It is super slow, but the time goes by quickly watching the people who use the $1 video rental that is generally right nearby :) |

| I can understand why people use the Coinstar machines. I have even used them a few times myself, never again though. I can sit at home for 2 hours filling coin rolls. Run out of quarter rolls and have to run to the bank or Office Depot to get some more. Or I can stand in front of the Coinstar machine for 20 min. and then go out to dinner and a movie. But, every time I did it the thought of just giving 10% of my money just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm going to keep my eyes open for a good deal on a ROYAL SOVEREIGN Model FS 4DA Coin Sorter in the near future. |

Actually, my bank has a Coinstar and there is no charge if you have an account. Even if the machine shorts me a little its well worth it to not have to roll the coins. I usually only dump between $20 and $30 worth of coin which takes about a minute.
You can count me among the lucky. My wife is a big Glenn Beck fan. From there all it took was a short explanation on the metal content of various coins (with the help of Coinflation of course) and she was on board. While she's not comfortable buying rolls and boxes from the bank (still working on that) she is perfectly willing to give me the copper pennies and nickels from her change purse.
It would help if you could get her to understand the nature of hyperinflation and how certain coins are likely to hold their value. I know it can be difficult to get some people to understand these points, but its important to try. |

Sorry to hear about your loss and that your wife wont just leave your coins alone. I would make your own little area for you to do your coin stuff in and either lock everything up or come to some sort of agreement for her never to touch the things in that area |

| My GF doesn't agree with my coin sorting either, and the agreement we came to, was that when I cashed in the zincs at the coinstar, I would get a gift card (100% value!) to old navy so she could shop for clothes. Now she loves it when I come in the house with boxes of pennies to sort, instead of the "uggh, more pennies!?!?" and the rolly eyes I used to get before. She's starting to come around now, and I just need to get her more involved in the sorting. |

NDFARMER my wife and I have had a long conversation about the coins/silver etc. I have. I have made book for her that details what I have and the value as well as places she can go to look at the updates values like coinflation, kitco etc. I would suggest you and everyone else do the same! |
