Just for fun I thought I would run a little contest with prizes for the winners. I am always getting grief at home about how she never sees any pennies going out, and I was curious what the true market value is of all these copper cents we are hoarding, so I listed a bag and a box of copper cents on eBay starting significantly below melt value. This way I can satisfy my curiousity about whether the market has started to develop for copper cents yet and I can tell a certain lady "See, there are pennies going out." Of course she doesn't know that whatever is left over after all the eBay and Paypal fees are extracted will be plowed right back into purchasing virgin boxes from the bank to sort through and add back to the hoard. <G> Shhh.. Be vewy, vewy quiet.
There are 2 lots so there will be 2 contests. One lot is a full bag of copper cents and one lot is for a full box of copper cents. The auctions close late Wednesday night. I have posted links to the auctions in the Buy/Sell section. Here are the rules of the contests: 1. All guesses must be posted on this thread by the end of the day on Tuesday - Midnight PST 2. One guess per person on each lot. 3. Closest guess to final price in each category wins, whether high or low. 4. Ties to be decided in favor of earlier post. 5. Winners to be announced here. 6. Winners to email me shipping address for delivery of prizes. 7. Open to residents of the US and Canada. 8. Odds of winning determined by number of entries received. 9. A purchase does not increase your chances of winning.
Now, the prizes. I know most of you can understand the pain and anguish I am undergoing allowing 7500 coins to slip out of my hoard, so I can't give too many more coppers away. My two cents worth: Winner in each category will get to increase their own hoard slightly.. prize will be 2 copper cents (1 BU wheat & 1 BU Lincoln from the 60's) direct from my hoard to yours. It is not like winning the lottery, but the odds are significantly better, and it will not be paid out over 20 years. It is all about the "the thrill of winning" Of course if you are fiercely competitive you might subscribe to the same philosophy as Ghengis Khan, who said "It is not enough that I win, all others must lose" But for the rest of us it is just for fun.
Of course if you want to increase your hoard in a more significant fashion, feel free to bid on the auctions. I will give a shipping discount to any member here of $2 on each lot or $3 if they win both lots. So if you win total shipping will be $7 for one lot or $6 for both lots.

Thanks for playing, Guys! Good luck in the contest. I imagine like most ebay auctions all the bidding will occur in the final 10 seconds. There are currently 7 watchers on the bag of copper cents. Interesting to note that the first two guesses come from guys who hoard nickels instead of pennies.

CONTEST CLOSED!
Interesting to note that noone had a guess above melt. Never understimate eBay bidders. I saw a $25 box of unsearched cents go for $65 plus $10 shipping last week. Made me think I might be wasting my time by actually sorting the copper ones out. I am probably a little too early for the copper market to have developed, but you never know. Tomorrow our curiousity will be satisfied. Thanks to all those who participated and good luck!

Well, the much hoped for flurry of bidding in the final seconds never materialized, but as most of us anticipated, the coins went for a little below melt. The market hasn't fully developed for copper cents yet.
Congratulations to BonPecheur! He knows the copper market better than any of us. I need to borrow his crystal ball next time. He won both categories! His guess of $45 for the box was dead on.. I will have to include a suitable bonus for nailing the price exactly. His guess of $85 on the bag was only off by $2.25 from the final hammer price of $87.25.
BonPecheur, please email me or PM me your shipping address so I can get your prizes out. Thanks to everyone who participated. I will run another contest the next time I am brave enough to put some of my hoard up for auction.

Thanks for running the contest ! It was fun and enlightening.
I wouldn't say I know the copper market that well, rather the mindset that EBAYER's are in for items like that.
All in all, you still you made a nice profit margin ! |

Thanks for playing. I only see 4 coins in the picture. Where is the pic of the Bonus for hitting the exact price on the box of copper?
