This is a note I sent to my friends in the NH free stater community....possibly it is of interest to you guys as well for these rough snapshot statistics.

OK now for those here who have been pining for a one ounce copper bullion coin....of course such a coin continues to "not exist;" however here is a thought. Pre-1982 Canadian nickels (.999 nickel content) have a current melt value of about $21 a pound. That was roughly the average spot price between March 1 and March 16. On ebay, they seem to sell consistently for around $15 - $25 a pound, or 15 - 25 u.s. cents per 5 canadian cents of face value. I guess that works out to around 3 - 5x face value. They seem to be somewhat thinly traded.

As of March 16 I see 33 listings over the last 16 days, 20% of which failed to sell. There were about four sellers and an average of perhaps three bidders per item. The nickels seemed to sell repeatedly for prices which (not including shipping) were as low as 75% of melt value and as high as 125% of melt value. However the only listings that sold so high were small-quantitiy listings, around half a pound.

Most of the sellers seem to be in Canada and shipping costs seem to be high, around two bucks a pound. I didn't include shipping costs above.

I don't own any of these nickels but am curious to see how much interest there is in such items. They strike me as interesting for diversification purposes. If there is a demand for them around here in New Hampshire, maybe I will figure out a way to buy them low and make them available low.

If you are in New hampshire maybe making a trip across the border would make sense, that way you can buy them at face.

A funny thing I've noticed on ebay is that a fair number of people seem to be buying base metal ingots from jetco for many times the melt value. People have bought 400 gram bars of Ni from them for $60-70 US, and some fool put down $200 plus $30 shipping for a 5 kilo (11 lb) bar of copper, which is over $20 a pound. It's amazing how many people decide to "invest" in base metals without even looking at market rates. I guess some of them are buying the hype that these generic bars will have "collector vale" somehow.

If they are consistently selling for that price (and they are, I've been watching), then they are at least temporarily worth that price.

Based on the e-bay sell prices I tracked last month, if you can obtain a Jetco copper for under $35 a kilo, you can sell it on ebay for a 20-40% profit pretty much every time.

Many people on this board have discussed melting pennies.
I have never been one of them.

However,
The idea of melting canadian nickles inside the USA and turning them into "One troy ounce nickel rounds" intrigues me.
If any of you live within 100 miles of San Francisco, CA and have an interest in this activity, feel free to send me a private message.

I have the desire, a physical location, a modest budget, and a shop full of tools.

Watch this video CAREFULLY.
The BBC reported that Building Seven HAD ALREADY collapsed, but their newswoman was standing in front of a live video feed of Building Seven STILL STANDING.
The BBC knew in advance that Building Seven was going to collapse. They have NOT denied the authenticity of this Video, but they claim that they "Lost" the original tapes. They are in the information business. This is the single most important video footage ever recorded (911 as a whole). They "lost" the only part that someone is calling them a liar about. they still have all the other tapes. They ONLY lost the ones that people are calling them on.
How convenient, kinda like "losing" 5 million emails.
Don't be afraid to watch the video!
Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you angry.

Melting down coins

11. (1) No person shall, except in accordance with a licence granted by the Minister, melt down, break up or use otherwise than as currency any coin that is current and legal tender in Canada.

Offence and punishment

(2) Every person who contravenes subsection (1) or any condition attached to a licence referred to in that subsection is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding two hundred and fifty dollars or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding twelve months or to both, and, in addition to any fine or imprisonment imposed, the court may order that the articles by means of or in relation to which the offence was committed be forfeited to Her Majesty.

I've never heard of an export restriction on Canadian coins. There is a search for canadian laws at laws.justice.gc.ca/en/search and the only one that mentions both "coin" and "export" is the Excise Tax Act. None of the "coin" mentions there talk about export.

I have to wonder why none of the major private mints has come up with 1-10 ounce nickel bars or rounds. It must be that they don't feel there is a large enough market for them or that the market price of nickel will be able to maintain its gains. Pure nickel can't be that difficult to mint if Canada has put out all of those nickels for all of those years.

If the U.S. Mint came out with nickel and/or copper bullion coins (much like the silver eagles) they would give the small investor a way to obtain such base metals without hoarding 'their" other coinage. They would not sell them for less than their melt value of course, but then too they would not be subjected to any melt ban.

Anyone successful in finding a place(s)in the US that will purchase Ni Canadian nickels for close to spot? I've only called one local scrapyard so far here in Arkansas, and they don't buy nickel. I read a report (I think on Kitco) that projects nickel prices to drop in 2008 because the Chinese are turning to lower grade nickel ore projects and other substitutes for Ni containing stainless steel.

FasTTcar was talking about going to plating companies to sell Canadian Nickels. They are currently paying more than spot for their nickel.
