I've just experienced another symptom of the fall of the US.

Below is the text of a message I sent to Auto Zone concerning a Duralast alternator I purchased there today:

The theory of "interchangeable parts has been around for about 200 years, and has served the USA well. I suppose that concept is out the window now that you're having alternators rebuilt by illiterate peasants in Mexico.

The one I just returned to your store had a housing that was cast about a 1/4" larger in diameter than the original, and would not fit, as I learned after fooling with it for 1 1/2 hours.

I hope that those of you who decided to move manufacturing to a third world sh!thole to make a little more profit are eaten alive by the starving -out of work Americans we'll all be seeing in the next few years.

Your Customer no more.

John

We are literally moving backwards in basic technology due to substandard products coming from third world nations!!!!!

I'm beyond furious right now, so I'll leave it at that.

Are you sure they gave you the right one? A difference that large makes me think they sold you the wrong part or that it was mislabeled. I bought a Duralast alternator from them about two weeks ago and it was the easiest part swap I've ever done. Seems to charge better than the factory original did (at least for the last year or so) and feels well-made.

I usually stick to Napa, but they aren't open on Sundays and I needed to get it done.

The part numbers all matched what their computer specified. There are literally million of Jeep Cherokee's on the road, and I'm sure they've sold thousands of alternators for them. You'd think they could get it right.

I'll be calling the local dealerships tomorrow to get an OEM unit, probably at twice the price.

It just seems that nobody gives a damn about doing a good job anymore. This should have been a thirty minute to one hour job. Instead it was half a day wasted!

Ok....I feel better now.

I just recently left my job with Advance Auto Parts. I spent almost 2 years in the stores and 2 months in the warehouse. During my last week at the warehouse I was picking rotors. At some point in the week it became obvious that the dayshift had pulled some old rotors from somewhere in the DC and put them in with what I was picking. It was kinda depressing. The boxes with an inch of dust all said made in America, half an inch of dust said made in Canada. The dust free boxes all said made in China.

I mentioned this to my boss and he said that AAP was going to open an office in China soon to put the company buyers closer to potential suppliers.

America...it was fun while it lasted.

One thing I've noticed about the goods I buy that are chinese made is they're all almost just right.
Almost is the key word there.

At least... Twice the price....

Try calling a automotive electrical shop. There are normally one or two that deal in starters and alternators exclusively in the phone book.

Try to get Factory Rebuilt or new oem.(not made in China or Mexico)
Around here I pay about 15%-50% more to do it this way but have eliminated many problems because of the quality of the parts and expertise.

Ordered today, a little over 3X the price. Went w/ OEM. A lot to pay, but I'd rather not have to replace it again in a year or two....

You think foreigners make junk?
Try dealing with US made cars!
My first car went through a battery a year and an alternator every two years.
(OK it was a used car, but going through a battery a year? My last two used cars never needed the batteries or alternators replaced that often.)
My dad had a Cavalier, a month after he bought it he had to take it to the dealership SIX TIMES because the electronic brain kept going bad. After finally getting it fixed right he kept that car for years and only drove it 45,000 miles-
and the crankshaft broke inside it. (So much for the song and dance 'quality is job one.')

If my latest car goes on me it will be replaced by a Japanese made car. No more 'American Made' Detroit junk for me!
If the US Big Three Automakers won't make quality they won't get my business.
(/My Rant off)

I change with the times-
but like silver coins found in your change
I stay the same.

I prefer Japanese models for their reliability records, MPG. And their resell value.

Hard to argue with, but I was specifically speaking of parts being manufactured in the turd world.

Personally, I think the best thing that could happen to GM and Chrysler would be for them to go bankrupt, and for the plants to be bought and run by new entities.
