Any suggestions on how I can get a dependable and quiet generator. Honda seems to have some good ones but they are at least $800 to $1000. I'll pay that if I have to, but I like to have a few options. Does anybody have any good/bad generator stories to share?

You can get a good, cheap generator, but you can not get a good, cheap, quiet generator.
If you want the generator for emergency home use, I would consider going with good, cheap, and loud generator and then I would consider building an outside "home" for it that would serve to muffle the noise, protect it from theft, keep it dry, and keep the exhaust out of the house.
If you are buying it for a RV or camping or boating, the best thing to do is bite the bullet, forget about the price, and buy the quietest generator that you can find (likely a Honda). IMHO |

Yep, unfortunately when it comes to generators, especially portables, cheap and quiet cannot be used in the same sentence.
I don't know what your needs in a generator are, but maybe look into a home standby type generator. They are enclosed in a cabinet and are quieter (not quiet, quieter) than a typical portable. They also run on propane and or natural gas.
The smaller units aren't too big or heavy that they couldn't be mounted on a small trailer. Along with a pair of 100 pound propane tanks, you could have a decent portable set up. Along with more wattage than the typical portable.
Plus propane stores indefinitely, gasoline can not.
They can be had for less than $2000. I know more than you originally mentioned, but it might be money well spent.
Just an idea...

Maybe this site can help you in your search for a generator-
You must be logged in to see this link. Prices are high, maybe it can give youan idea of what to look for in a gnerator. A few of the links on that site are down. Use it as a jumping off point in your search for a generator.
A bit off topic but this looks interesting-

Producing your own diesel is less complicated than producing your own gasoline or natural gas in a post SHTF world (making your own diesel is not simple, but it is less complicated than making your own gasoline/nat gas/propane.)
A little info on diesel generators (pdf file)

I hope this information is useful to somebody. |
