So I'm a fairly small-scale hand sorter, and have been doing it for a little under a year now.

One of my hoarding goals has been to get a hundred pounds worth of copper cents. Doesn't sound like much if you're dealing in tons, but when you're hand sorting at less than 20% copper, it seems like a significant milestone.

So, I finally filled up a "35-pound" cat litter container and figured it was time to move it out of the kitchen. I was shocked when I could barely lift it.

So, out of curiosity I put it on an old bathroom scale once I get it out to the garage.

170 pounds!

w00t!

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?

Good job. You gotta crawl before you walk! Before you know it, you'll have 1000 lbs. Then a ton....

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Congratulations. Many of us started as hand sorters. Hand sorting is very relaxing.

"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

Congratulations! That is a significant amount. I started as a hand sorter too.

You have been shaking that kitty litter bucket. That is over 25,000 coppers.. I can only get about 23,000 in one of those buckets.

How did you manage to keep them in the kitchen this long without getting into trouble? Perspiring minds want to know.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Thanks, all :)
The other nice thing is that I've got four boxes of rolls, and a gallon glass bottle that are also full, so I've probably gotten my first eighth-ton at this point.
As far as the litter container, it's one of the biggest I've seen (and I've got four cats, so I've seen a lot of them), Tidy Cat bonus size. But, I can't rule out that my scale is a bit on the heavy side, it has always called me a giant tub.
And I get kitchen storage privileges the hard way... I do all the cooking and cleaning! :(

250 lbs hand sorting. I probably wouldn't have made it. I jumped in with both feet and got a Ryedale first. I did sort through my 3rd shift till every night getting maybe 1.50 a week that way. my brother gave me a tidy cat bonus size bucket. 38lbs cat litter. I did a zinc drop with it. 278.00 in it. I had to shake it and stand on the lid to get it on but it had 27,800 pennies in it.

I use a lot of those kitty litter buckets.. but I don't overfill them.. I don't want to hurt myself trying to lift them.

Tonight I got a new penny wagon.. capacity - 1000 pounds.. half a ton. Perfect for moving small quantities around the penny processing center.

1000lbs...small quantity? That just shows the difference between an old pro and a beginner like myself. I thought when I had 550 lbs of unsorted on my cart I was doing it big. LOL

By the way...I used a hand truck to move the 27,800 zincs. But I did have to lift it in and out of the van. All those years of bodybuilding are finally being put to use.

PennehChaos. go ahead and put the new empty cat litter bucket on top of the full one. Fill it up that way and you wan't have to lift a full one again.
