A seller on ebay is saying in his item description that the Lincoln cent has been retired by the mint.
I don't think it is true.
I haven't done a Google search yet. But I thought I would check here first.
Since no one is talking about it, I assume it is false.
I may ask the seller where he got that information.

I got a reply from the seller which quotes the U.S. Mint talking about putting a new design on the reverse of the Lincoln cent after 2009.
So he means it will have a new backside.
But in his item description, he clearly states that The U.S. Mint has "retired" the Lincoln cent after 100 years of service.
Of course, you must always read ebay item descriptions with a grain of salt.
Consider the term "Unsearched" describing wheat cents on ebay. Yeah right ! |

| He may mean the Memorial penny has been retired. For 2009 there will be a series of 4 different reverse designs. The first one will be out on February 12th. I am hoping that after this year (the centennial of the Lincoln penny) that they will discontinue the penny, and lift the melt ban. Then I think our hoards would go up in value a lot faster. |

| If the dollar collapses, the penny will be useless. A loaf of bread may cost $20. You would get a hernia trying to a gallon of milk and bread with your pennies. |

| My opinion is they retired the Lincoln cent in 1958 and replaced it with the Lincoln memorial cent. Just my opinion. |

| When they retire the cent and lift the melt ban, I would think that numismatic values would increase pretty quickly too, as many cents are melted thus decreasing supply. |

I would not bet on that - I've read that as much as 50% of pennies never see their second transaction. There are a lot of pennies out there sitting in jars. If/when the penny is discontinued everyone and their mother will be saving them for "collector value". Banks will collect up what they can for the Mint. Then it's game over for our copper penny hobby. What you are holding, you are holding, and there will be few more that enter the copper bullion market. |

I hope that happens in the next couple of years. That is what it will take for the price of copper to go to 5 - 10 times face. Then our hoards will be worth quite a bit and I will be able to tell my wife I told you so. |

Actually, every design was submitted and decided on last year. You think they're due out in 3 days and don't have the designs done???
If you want to see them, go to the mint web site and look in the pressroom and images. |

I believe he was actually trying to say that in 2010 there have been no design accepted yet but it is said to be a design of lincoln presearving the union. I think we all know what the new 2009 reverse designs will look like. |
