Hello all, I have a general question to ask:
I found a Indiana State quater with what looks like the clad layer being fully removed. I think its called a 'strike-through' error. None of the local coin guys could help me or buy it unless it was graded. There is only one on ebay and its going for $600 and over the past couple of months, I have seen similar coins for for that price.
I know of the three grading companies (NGC,PGCS, ANACS). I believe the first two have membership and dealer fees, etc. So I think I will have to go with ANACS. But heres the question wanting to ask: Would this be placed under 'modern coins' even if its a error coin? When it says a '5 coin minimiun' do I have to send 5 coins at $12 (or fee price) each (I only want to send one coin, but does not seem to be an option) And are they a good and respectable company?
Thanks for the long read and look forward to any responses!

I use NGC. You can join the ANA ($36) and get direct submission rights to NGC - $12 per coin in modern, and yes you have to send in 5 coins. You also have to pay return postage and insurance. Roughly about $80 for 5 coins. Perhaps you have a really pristine ASE floating around you think might make ms-70? Good luck. BTW: Your description sounds like a "missing clad layer", probably the same price range.

| Some local coin shops will use their membership to send your coin in, and it would most likely be cheaper than doing it yourself. |

You could take it to a larger coin show.. like the one coming up in Cinci.. and get expert opinions from some of the representatives of those organizations or from members manning the table for CONECA. That way you aren't paying huge fees to find out what you really have. |

It seems I just may try to find a local coin guy to get it sent in to be graded. It would actually be nice to find a error coin guy to just sell it, but that does not seem to be an opition. I would like to ask what is the turn around time here? If 15 days is a extra option, then whats economy??
I got the coin out again (I got it 4 months ago) and it seems the copper side got some crazy tarnish/dirt on it. Would this effect the grading? |

| I suggest you go to a coin store or coin show prior to sending in anything. Or look up items on ebay. If it is not worth about $50, it sure wouldn't pay to have it graded. Always remember that having a coin graded does not mean it will be worth more. You could be spening more than the coin is worth. |
