I found this in a bank roll today.

<img src="http://img152.imageshack.us/my.php?image=60054176yn7.jpg">

There is no reason for me to believe that this is not a legitimate error, since I recall reading about a similar error on a clad quarter.

What are the chances of this being legit, and what is the recommended course of action?

Should I have this graded by PCGS? Take it to a local coin dealer?

Please let me know what you think.

Probability of this being a real mint generated error are zero. These having been coming up for years and not even one has ever been certified as real. Before spending money at a grading service, take it to a local dealer or two.

From the scan it definitely looks like the bicentennial face was machined down. Then the reverse of the 1974 was hollowed out and the face of the bicentennial was dropped in. I saw a show on the History channel that showed a guy making these. He sold them to gift shops as novelty items.

The 1976 was cut and inserted into the 1974 you can see the seam on the bottom and sides of the 1976 side. This is a bad 2 headed half I have seen better.. A lot better. And they should have put both the same year.. still fun to find.

I've read about that technique, and it certainly could have been done on this coin (especially considering the mismatch of mint marks).

However there is a line on the rim, about 1/5 of the way in from the bicentennial side, as well. The reeds do line up though.

They don't modify the reeds at all. They machine out a pocket on the reverse of one coin that the face of the other coin fits into.

I know that they don't need to.

But the fact remains that the reeds have a large line cut into them. Perhaps harsh clamping during fitting?

Yep, probably from mounting it in a lathe chuck.
