We almost broke $20/lb for nickel this week - friday's close was $19.9157. I'm guessing we break $20 next week.

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha..." <--Me laughing all the way to the bank ;)

Today I "bought" $300 or three boxes of nickels at face value from my bank here in the USA.
For the very first time, the teller knew what I was up to as soon as I told her that I wanted the nickels.
She had even heard of coinflation.com

The days when no one knew what I was talking about seem to be passing into history.

Get 'em while you can. I don't think we will be able to get nickels for face value by the thousands at our local banks much longer.

Just my opinion (pronounced "openYawn"), of course.

I don't want to be a "Peter Panic" here folks but at this rate I believe we may soon see signs posted in the banks that limit the sales of nickels to $10.00 or maybe even less.

I bought boxes this week too and will again next week. (If they are still selling them.)

Guess I better get out early tomorrow and see if I can't pick up 5 or 6 boxes of nickels. Only picked up 1 box last week. Spent too much on those new Dollars. OK, I realize the dollars will never be worth anything, but I am a sucker for new, shiny coins. The good news is that those boxes of nickels only take up 1/4th the space of the boxes of cents.

I went to the bank today and got 3 rolls of nickels. (I know, not much, but I have to buy food, too..) The first roll was one nickel short. Wasn't too happy... Put it aside to take it back and whine.

Then I opened the next roll. Out popped 15 Canadian nickels. Dates range from 1940 to 1982 (and only one of those). I'm guessing someone thought it would be a great way to get rid of those Canadian nickels. Oh, and the roll actually had an extra nickel, so I don't have to whine, after all. (Nothing exciting in the third roll.)

Purple Penny,

Do you think they are going to believe you when you go back whining about the short roll? Let us know how it turns out. I know what you mean about tight budgets.. for me it is that darned mortgage rather than the food. I was only able to get 219 rolls of nickels yesterday.. 2 boxes from 1 of my banks and 19 rolls from another. I had planned on getting 5-6 boxes but the banks didn't have them in stock. They tend to only keep enough on hand to satisfy their merchant customers plus whatever comes in over the counter. They said I could order as much as I want for next week though. So the trick to getting large quantities is just to do a preorder each week. One of the rolls I got was 2 nickels short and it kinda frosted me.. seems I get shorted on nickel rolls more than anything else.. heck, the penny rolls sometimes have an extra dime in them because of the coin sorters most folks use. I don't think whining at my bank will do me any good. If you are only going to buy a few rolls at a time you might consider taking a digital scale with you to the bank and weighing them right there at the counter and handing them back the short rolls.

I don't know if they'd believe me. But since the second roll had an extra nickel, I got all my nickels, so I won't complain about it. Actually, I think getting the Canadian nickels satisfied me enough that I decided not to complain.

I searched for "Illigitmum non carborendum" and the top replies were,
"Why don't you just run a google search for, "Illigitmum non carborendum"?

This felt like a twilight zone loop of logic wherein the answer was a qwestion and the qwestion was another qwestion and the answer was never anything but an endless series of qwestions.

Suffice it to say, I gained great pleasure in finding out the answer to,
"What does, 'lligitmum non carborendum' mean? was a recursive loop of qwestions folding in on themselves like an MC Escher print.

Try it!

This forum is all about having a little fun and sharing ideas. Glad I was able to bring a little levity to your evening. As usual, my spelling and grammar are way off, but you don't get busted for that as often in Latin. I was just trying to express my views on the Mint. What is it the mint director said when they banned the melting and export of copper cents and nickels? "We need to do this in order to preserve coinage" So I am trying to do my best to accede to his wishes. Yep, that's what I'm doing.. "Preserving Coinage.. 2 tons at a time"

THnaks for meeting me halfway on the meaning of your signature, but being the idiot that I am, I still don't know what the English traslation of that would be.

Let me guess,
It is illegal to have carbon
It is illigitmate to "non" carbon
Illigitimate people don't have carbon
carbon is illigitimate
no carbon is ever illigitimate
carbon illigitimacy forever!

Sorry for being such a dense bone head, but in this case, yepp, you really do have to dumb it down and spell it out word for word, or else be misunderstood.

Sorry for being such a dumb american

Basicly...very basicly means don't let the bastards wear you down...

this means "Don't let the bastards grind you down", but it
is not real Latin; it is a pseudo-Latin joke.

"Carborundum" is a trademark for a very hard substance composed
of silicon carbide, used in grinding. (The name "Carborundum" is a
blend of "carbon" and "corundum". "Corundum" denotes aluminium
oxide, and comes to English from Tamil kuruntam; it is related to
Sanskrit kuruvinda = "ruby".) "The "-ndum" ending suggests the
Latin gerundive, which is used to express desirability of the
activity denoted by the verb, as in Nil desperandum = "nothing to
be despaired of"; addendum = "(thing) fit to be added";
corrigendum = "(thing) fit to be corrected"; and the name Amanda,
from amanda = "fit to be loved").

Illegitimis is the dative plural of illegitimus =
"illegitimate"; the gerundive in Latin correctly takes the dative to
denote the agent. Illegitimus could conceivably mean "bastard" in
Latin, but was not the usual word for it: Follett World-Wide Latin
Dictionary (Follett, 1967) gives nothus homo for bastard of known
father, and spurius for bastard of unknown father.

The phrase seems to have originated with British army
intelligence early in World War II. It was popularized when U.S.
general Joseph W. "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell (1883-1946) adopted it as
his motto. Various variant forms are in circulation.

That's a seriously erudite explanation.

Ridewithme38 has it exactly right. I would have answered earlier but I was smuggling in a couple of boxes of nickels I have to hide from the female half. She knows there is a hoard of copper cents in the back storage room, but probably has no idea how big it is. She doesn't know about the hoard in the garage or about all those boxes of nickels. Boy, those nickels are heavy! Also sorting through a few costomer wrapped rolls I picked up yesterday when I made my nickel run. That last roll had 58% copper.. Sweeeeeeeeeeet! I changed my signiture to avoid any further obuscation.

Please don't change your signature just because I was too uneducated to understand it.
I enjoyed reading your explanation, and I learned a lot from it.

Now, you've rasied a very serious topic, family.

My wife knows that I hoard nickels and pennies and she grudgingly allows it, but she basically thinks I am a nut.
She thinks that I am "spending" money.
I tell her that I'm "converting" money.

Full disclosure:

When I was a kid, my parents had the little blue cardboard books with the little spaces into which you could press various coins.
I hate to admit this, but when I was a teenager, I took some of those coins out of those collections and spent them at face value.
Shame on me! I AM ashamed of this.

I admit to it here, because I know that it is tempting for a kid, especially a teenager to do this.

There is a big issue around this holding of coins.
Do you keep them in a safe?
Do you tell your wife honestly how much you have?
Do you disguise the boxes?
Should we worry at all about these qwestions?

Also this thread started out as
Nickel hits $20 per pound, or something to that effect.

As to the price of Nickel in general, I would like to point out this chart from kitco.
It shows that over 5 years the stocks of nickel have indeed trended down, but NOT in a straight line.
There have big very big swings in the reported stocks.
When I look at that chart I see that there periodically comes into availability a really huge qwantity.

Please take the time to observe this chart for your self.

WooHoo! Canadian_Nickle was right! $20 bucks a pound, just like he called it. Now if I can just get him to help me write my hoard code for my meager hoard. I didn't change the signiture because of you, Atheist. It had been figured out, so I wanted to do a new one for variety. I think all the females probably think we are nuts.. and they may be right, but we are having fun and it is a lot less costly hobby than many others. Hey, she knows where you are.. and that you are not out blowing money on other things. I think if she knew how much you had actually hoarded she might want to "convert" that hoard to something she would rather have than a pile of old pennies and nickels. Ladies are always good at converting our hard earned cash into something we would never even think of buying <G>

i wish i am still in canada

just want to drop by and say hi to all fellow hoarders

when i left Canada for HK 4 months ago, nickel was still "just" around USD$15 a pound, and i thought it would take quite a while for it to reach another critical point like $16(which makes it $1 an ounce), let alone $20

i am drooling like Homer J., but across the Pacific; i am both jealousy and envy of all of you in north america, especially in Canada; i think i would have to acquire those 100% nickels through a coin dealer next time i am in Canada

by the way, anyone know of any coin dealers selling those pure nickels a couple time above their face value yet?

good luck to you all, and most importantly, enjoy the process

Hey ballcopper. Good to know you're still around. Too bad yr back in asia - by the time you come back, the nickel may be gone. To me ... hahaha!

I haven't seen nickels selling for over face at coin dealers yet - but I did sell one box (2000coins) to another forum member at spot cost, back when nickel was ~$15.

Hope you and yours are doing well. What's the coinage like over there? Steel? Or maybe aluminum?

hello, CN,

the lowest common denominator for coins in HK is the 10-cent coin, i might be wrong, but it is made with brass, and it is lighter than our cents; so copper has to be way more expensive than it is now to be worthwhile for hoarding; besides, my heart is set on nickel;

coin hoarders in Canada are enjoying the best opportunities of their life time; right now, even the nickel content alone in the 5-cent pieces(1982-1996?) is already worth the face value, let alone the 100% pre-1982 5-cent

good luck to all, but don't work too hard, save some for me
