HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Gee, I guess they'll have to start charging 25% final value fees.

NEW YORK--EBay Inc. (EBAY: 13.28, 0.02, 0.15%) is showing signs that it is being hurt by the recession. The Internet auction site operator says its fourth-quarter earnings sank 31%.
San Jose, Calif.-based eBay said Wednesday it earned $367 million, or 29 cents per share, in the quarter. Excluding one-time items, eBay earned 41 cents per share -- 2 cents higher than the prediction of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.
Revenue fell 6% to $2.04 billion, missing analysts' expectations for $2.12 billion.

| E-Bay should be flooded with junk as people scramble for cash. Instead they decided to become less like a giant flea market/pawn shop/auction house/garage sale and more like an online retailer. It really is too bad that they just couldn't be happy with what they were as they had a great niche. So down they go... |

Thats what I'm haha-ing about. They stuck it to all the little people hard, who apparently have stuck it back, and I bet they hurt more in their bottom line than me not making $2.00 on some trinket. HAHA! |

I don't think they are really being hurt by the recession. What they are being hurt by is poor business decisions. They just got too greedy. As they suck up the majority of any potential profit to be made, the average seller just votes with his feet. Why should he do all the work, take all the risk, and ebay pocket all the profit? I am sure I am not the only one who has cut my selling on ebay significantly. I still sell a few items there, but only things with enough profit in the deal to cover all those fees and still leave a little bit to support my bad penny habit. |

| I used to love ebay for all the true auction type deals. Now it's all fixed price, price reserve, excessive shipping. BS, BS, BS for both buyer and seller. |

Those fixed price auctions that last 30 days are the only way I can get any business done on ebay.
There are lots of times that someone is looking for a certain part and they need in then. It's the same way I am when I'm buying for a customer. Something is old and outdated and I cant get it new, I turn to ebay or an internet store. I've had to overnight stuff and have had things overnighted on ebay before. On a side note, If ebay was smarter they would have launched a second fixed price website and kept ebay auction only. |

I agree with Neckro.. I used to love eBay as both a buyer and seller. Ebay's price gouging has forced many sellers to go to fixed price or reserve in order to not lose even more money after eBay robs them. At least 2 members here have sold bags of copper cents in eBay auctions below face.. and then had to pay eBay and PayPal fees on top of that.
As a seller I do not engage in excessive shipping.. even though the USPS rates just went up, I am holding the line and still only charge $10 for up to 70 pounds. |

Yep those idiots are digging their own graves.
1) Changed it so no neg/neutral feedback can be given by sellers to bad buyers 2) Raised fees unless you do mega sales on there 3) Forcing people to use Paypal instead of traditional checks or money orders (they claim it's for buyer protection but we know it's because they want a piece of every payment too) 4) Encouraging sellers to offer free shipping (so that final values are higher and their fees from final values are higher - they get no fees from shipping costs)

Unfortunately EBay's business model with auctions makes it that it can be hit or miss with timing for someone looking for what you're selling. But the fixed price option has some brutal final value fees so that hurts the bottom line big time. Your other option is to go to a store format, but then you pay out the you know what just to have a store. |

| The whole thing just raises prices. People buy or they don't. You sell if you make money. But you are selling to sheeple, so as long as everyone is making money who cares? Thats the business model. |

As a seller you just have to change your business model to take into account whatever they do, and sell only those things that will generate enough profit to still leave some crumbs for the seller. This is why you see a lot more high fixed prices for things.
One thing eBay should do for the sellers if they are going to charge all those fees and make PayPal the mandatory "safe" payment method is to take care of invoicing and collecting the payments from the buyers. If a buyer has to have a PayPal account to buy something there then as soon as the "Buy it now" button is hit ebay should instantly transfer the funds from the buyer's paypal account to the seller's paypal account. |

| Hoard, good point on the instant money transfer. You would think that could be done easily. Of course if they did that people might actually catch on then that the two are one in the same. |

Well EBay does sort of have something in place like you describe. When you create a listing with it a Buy It Now option or Fixed Price option, there is a button you can check off that requires instant payment from the buyer to end the auction. When I tried that with some Fixed Price listings, it didnt seem to work for some reason. Grrr (I did get paid though within a day on all of them). |

I'm not sure about this, but I think you have to have an ebay store for this to work. |

To require immediate payment for your item, you must:
* Have a PayPal Premier or PayPal Business account when you list your item. (Go to PayPal to upgrade your account.) * Have an eBay seller account in good standing. * Specify a Buy It Now price of no more than $4,000. * Specify shipping costs (or include the shipping calculator in your listing) and include other related costs such as insurance and taxes, so your buyer knows exactly how much to pay.
