I am going to start getting brinks boxes of halves and plan to side search since they are in clear wrappers. Are the 40% halves easy to spot? Can someone post a side shot picture of a 90% , 40 % and clad together so I can see the sides of each.
Thanks

There is usually a distinct difference. I'm sure you will recognize them. If in doubt, date check the particular coin.
Deal |
Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

In most cases there isnt much differnce between the rimes of the 90% and the 40%. If there is the 90% is usually a little brighter. Remeber though that if you rub silver/it wears a lot It turns black, so some silver coins may have black rims.
Best to do what deal said "If in doubt, date check the particular coin" |

I didn't want to break the rolls since they are clear wrapped. I have one bank that will order them and my main bank that I do all my business with will buy them. Trying to make it fast and easy |

If you see something that looks different, open it up and look. You won't be slowed down to much. 40%'ers usually will jump out at you. |

I would make sure the bank will take them back rolled first.
Also it doesnt take very much time to look at dates every once in awhile. I think that little time spendt is worth more than missing out on a 90% or 40% half! |

You can actually replace them back into the brinks wraps fairly easily if you are careful. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I've never seen clear half dollar rolls, I used to get Brinks double decker boxes and they were always paper machine rolls. Brinks doesn't even roll halves here anymore, Loomis has a monopoly on that now and sells halves to Brinks. HH Mark |

The Brinks boxes I got a few weeks back were paper rolled. That being said, some 40% halves I have seen look like they have a copper band. This band is usually much lighter than a "real" copper band. About half the rims of the 40% halves I have seen are 2 toned, usually a lighter silver band then a darker silver or black band. Other than that, always pull out unusual coins! Some times the ones that appear to be foreign are actually slick silvers! |

Here is an idea for you slickeast-
get a hold of a 40% and a 90% silver half (Maybe a forum member would be willing to sell you one of each for a fair price.)
As you look at the edge of the clear wrapped rolls, compare what you see with the edge of the 90% and 40%.
Having the physical coins right in front of you gives you a much better idea of what to look for than a picture could ever do. |
I change with the times- but like silver coins found in your change I stay the same. ***************** The United States of America started out as the new Republic of Rome.

The edges on 40% are wildly variable. Some may look like a 90% half, some may show a LOT of copper. But, the silver cladding always shows too- will sometimes be green / dull compared to cupronickel; always looks a little different. When in doubt, check it out. |

Yep the 40% halves I got from boxes were missed by the person before doing edge sorting (he had run a black marker and drawn a line down the roll). Better checking the dates. Besides you might find an 1987-P or 2002 NIFC (not intended for circulation) in the box. |

I called the bank today to see if my pennies where in...nope. Thanks MLK for closing the banks for a day. Asked about 1/2s. They can't order them. So I went to my regular bank to ask them. Figured if I won't be using them as a dump I will ask. She wasn't sure about ordering 1/2s. She said she had some in the vault ready to go back. I asked how many...she said $1189.00. I said " I"LL TAKE EM". One ziplock bag CWR $190.00 yielded 4 - 90% (4 64's) and 17 - 40% ( 10 67's) (5 68's) (2 66's ). Does anyone do anything with the BI's? Let me know what else I should be looking for in my first 1/2's search..... Thanks a bunch guys. ya'll are really helping the "new" guy |

I keep all the '87 and all the proofs. Some keep the NIFC but I don't. Congrats on the score. HH Mark |
