I wish I could take credit for it but the wife got this one at the local Wilson Farms store. A young man used it to buy a lottery ticket! The clerk took it and commented that she never saw one like it before. My wife asked if she could buy it and the clerk was more than happy to get rid of it. It's a 1986 Ellis Island commemorative USA real silver dollar! 90%! It's scratched all to Hell but it's still the most awesome find I have ever seen. The old lady is really rubbing it in and laughing at me. Here's a photo of the silver dollar along with my strangest find, the Ben Franklin Memorial bronze token:

This silver proof commemorative dollar was issued by the United States Mint in 1986 to raise funds and awareness for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. This coin was struck from 26.73 grams of .900 silver and comes in its original US Mint issued box with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Wow, I have never heard of a coin like that. I'll make sure to keep my eyes open when I go to the local Wilson Farms store. Congrats! |

I figured out how to post a photo. Posted with my strangest find, the Ben Franklin Memorial bronze token. I got that in a roll of pennies. I wish I could take credit for the Ellis Island silver dollar but the wife got it and she wants it back. |

You can put it on Photobucket, then put it here. You might be able to put the link to the file using the C: directory inside the [url]s. That I don't know. |

Here is a link for some other info on the coin:

I found the other version issued that year, the nation of immigrants one, a few months ago. It is the non-silver version but in very good shape. I mentioned in my halves report that I found 6 proofs in last week's two box search. I think more is to come. We are seeing the kitchen sink being thrown in now as people empty coin jars and collections. |

That is a great coin to find in circulation.
As a side note concerning the Franklin coin/token- In Philadelphia PA there is a science museum called "The Franklin Institute"
In this institute/museum, they have many different science exibits for the general public to see, and in some cases, the public can make these exibits do things (make a lightbulb light up by turning a crank for example.)
In The Franklin Institute they had a coin operated stamping machine that would stamp out a token identical to the one you found. You paid fifty cents or some amount and the stamping machine would stamp out a souvenier token.
I have not been to the Franklin Institute in many years so I don't know if the coin stamping machine is still there, though I did find a token similar to the one you have, only it is in aluminum (maybe they changed the metal to lower the cost?) |
I change with the times- but like silver coins found in your change I stay the same. ***************** The United States of America started out as the new Republic of Rome.
Will The United States of America end up as the New Imperial Rome? |

The Franklin Institute is spelled out under the building on the back of the token in very small letters. The token is VERY high relief and appears to be very high quality. Material is bronze. It's the same diameter as a US Penny but it is twice as thick. Interesting info about the coin machine! |

Way cool find! I manage a small cafe and get to cull through change. My best find (so far) is a VG 1914 Barber dime. In 8 years I've also found 3 clad proof Washington quarters and a dcam 1963 nickel. There are small treasures still in circulation. Good hunting to all! |

I was looking at the coin and the scratches would seem to indicate that the plastic case was forced open with a knife or something similar. Lots of scratches on the face of it. This thing looks like it might have actually circulated???? It has lots of wear on it. |
