I am unfamiliar with the jet-boil system. Frankly the fact that part of it is being recalled bothers me. I'm looking into iodine as a method of purifying water to drink if you need more water than you can pack. I thought someone on here had a system where water is evaporated from a larger bowl and then condenses into a smaller bowl inside the bigger one; Polywrap covers the outside bowl. You would be distilling the water and not just boiling it. The downside here is that it would take quite awhile to get enough water to drink.
I guess that you could set one of these up (or buy a jet-boil system) inside your house and then test the water afterwards to see what is safe to drink. Of course the water you purified would be from the same area that you expect to bug-out-in.

I'll start a search on stills, solar and wood fire, and see what I come up with.

I am already in my "bug out" place but just in case.......I have two emergency bug out places at 1/2 and 1.5 miles with everything that I might need (winter or summer) to last me for three months.......I figured that that would be the most time that I need to get rid of who ever took over my home.

You bring up an interesting point about having multiple bug-out locations near each other, Ponce. I think that's something for the rest of us to consider, in case something happens to one of our locations.

Bug out bag is too small for me. I need my stuff. I have a dolly in my closet and know exactly what I'm taking. I'll just take my time, let the traffic die down.

What if you don't have the luxury of time? The purpose of the bug-out bag is to pack essentials, not stuff you want but stuff you NEED. Think small and compact, and pack only what you can carry if you have to get out very quickly.

I just saw this link for sleeping bags that go all the way to Antarctic-grade. Anyone familiar with this brand? Any other sleeping bag brands any of you would recommend, especially for extreme cold?

Here's a thread on GIM about what bag(s) to use for your bug-out bag:

my dh is starting training in a nearby city. he will be on his own for 9 hours since we only have one car. therefore with the gift card given to him by my parents i went and got him a new messenger bag that would go with his career training. it looks like a laptop bag...and most likely is but i am upcycling it for other uses. well today i went to my favorite dollar store and outfitted his bag with essentials for daily needs/emergencies. don't ask about defense since the building he is in has a metal detector. no guns or knives. THIS IS L. A. COUNTY. here is what i got him....

2 1L bottles of water
travel size hand sanitizer which can be refilled at home.
1 80-count soft case wipes
1 dental hygiene travel kit
1 box (9 ct.) instant coffee with sugar and cream included
1 box (40 ct.) chamomile tea
1 notebook....because he may be required to take notes!
3 energy bars
1 cinnabon caramel bar...first time trying it!
6 ct. top ramen noodles; beef and shrimp flavors
1 soft pack instant bisquick mix!!! new item at store!
2 triple antibiotic ointment! .33 oz.
1 small tarp

because i took everything that was boxed out of its packaging and into 1 qt. ziplock bags the bag doesn't weigh so much.

ARE YOU READY? ARE YOU SELF SUFFICIENT? ARE YOU GREEN????

Bug out bags are really good. Had one for years (large frame backpack). I am looking for a bug-out van now. Want to make it able to withstand an EMP. A van will make it easier to take "most wanteds" with me. Canoe strapped to the top. Getting out of the city may be hardest. May have to cross large river in canoe for all bridges will be blocked by panicked masses waiting to take whatever you have.

This is great. All of you have some good ideas!
