Okay, I know this one is NIFC. However, this one is strange in a few respects. First, it was fairly circulated but still looks nice. Basically the raised surfaces are fairly worn but the background looks somewhat mirrored. I guess this was a proof at one point and this is how they look when they have circulated for a while.
a few more questions.
the red book does not indicate that this is silver, but it has a silver color. any thoughts on that?
second, the red book lists the number minted in parenthesis. does that indicate proof, nifc, or something else?
finally, its about 1.5 times thicker than a regular coin. This is why i put it in the keep pile. it was only after several minutes of looking at it that I concluded that it was probably a former proof.

If it has a S mint it would be a proof half. It could be either a clad or silver proof. IT may look like silver because of the mirror finish that they have on proofs or it may be a silver proof(look at the edge) |

Parenthesis in the Red Book designates number of proofs issued.

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

thanks guys.
if i'm reading the red book correctly, there were no silver proofs that year.
have never seen a proof in the wild - only slabbed. Would a proof nomrally be thicker? |

Proofs look noticeably thicker when viewed on edge. They are supposed to weigh the same. I guess all the extra striking to make a proof moves more metal to the rim. The wider rim is a good way to spot potential proofs when edge checking (you also find a lot of '71's that way). |
