Found 15 lbs of broken Xmas lights. i know i need to remove bulbs but should i remove the plastic holders that hold the bulb before i take it to the scrap yard with other wire?
leave the plastic holders on. If they are the big glass bulbs they need to be removed, the little plastic bulbs can be left on. This is the case at my yard, yours may vary.
I had many different experiences with holiday lights like: -If you sneak them in or they dont care you can give full value (.65 here) -They call it harness wire and give you .35 here -They call it electric motor prices and give you .10
This is from 3 different yards. The prices are per a pound and when copper was over $3, so I do not know current values.
If they are glass bulbs take them out. If not, toss the string into a camp/bon/festivus fire and burn it real good, burn it to make sure all plastic is gone, make sure it's only Cu left, poke it and turn as often as you can. Fish out the burned Cu wire and stomp it into as tight a mass as you can, roll it around and stomp it some more. The more you stomp it on concrete or asphalt the brighter it looks. Throw it into the #1 scrap barrel and hope they take it as #1 when you turn it all in. OR Read up on smelting and save enough to try and make a pour.
