I bought a NGC first strikes Gem Uncirculated $5 gold AGE this morning. It does not have a grade, it only says GEM Uncirculated. What does it mean when it doesnt have a grade? Does this mean it's MS-69 instead of 70?

I have some first strikes. I've been lead to believe that it is a BS marketing scheme. I would expect it to be MS69. Hopefully it is a 70 though. I agree with fb101, call them.

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

| Actually NGC recently lost a lawsuit based on the marketing of "first strike" designations as having an increased value because of it. On one hand, it certainly is BS, but in the other hand this is a "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" market. If someone wants to collect first strikes, they certainly can, just as they collect early release, die varieties, or error coins. I personally would not pay a penny more for a first strike. I have the NGC docs and can submit directly, and I have an understanding that there is something about the strike from a new die that can be differentiated from a die used XX?? times, and that is how they base the designation. I suppose you need an electron microscope to tell the difference though... |

So I typed in the registry number for NGC and it claims the coin is ms-65, but then showed a population of 0 ms-65. I dont know if I'm reading it wrong or what.
Either way, great coin for the price. |

As noted. This has been all over the coin forums about the scam of saying a coin is first strike. Actually when you think about it that pharse is a joke in itself. Just who is standing there to grab the first coins minted? Who can verify that a coin was the first one minted? Why would the Mint allow someone to stand there waiting for the first strike coins? if there was such a thing as selling the first strike coins, don't you think the Mint itself would be marketing them? Are the first coins of any kind stamped with a number? All way to silly to even think you have a REAL first strike coin. I too purchased a few of them but full well knew that it was a scam but had to have one anyway. Sort of like having the last coin minted in a series. Yeah, right! Now which one is that? |
