I sorted my first box of cents today, mainly to see how the Cu/Zn distribution in Austin compares to what other people are seeing. I was in a hurry, so I took the Zn cents to a Coinmaster (yes, I know, 8.9%...). Included in the cents that I dropped into Coinmaster were 40 1982 cents, which I did not attempt to cull Cu vs. Zn.
I was stunned to see the Coinmaster printed receipt that said:
penny new 0.01 2101 21.01 penny old 0.01 41 0.41
This means that Coinmaster distinguishes between Cu and Zn cents! The receipt also makes it appear that Conmaster has the capability of reimbursing you at different rates (in this case, both $0.01) for the different cents. It also looks like I must have missed one of the Cu cents, as the coinmaster count was 1 higher than mine.
Anybody want to bet that Conmaster also sorts them into different buckets? Wonder where they go?

The Coin Master Counter / Sorter is a high quality, automatic coin counter and sorter.
The Coin Master has one simple adjustment for the coin diameter and another easy adjustment to set the coin thickness. Many other coin counters have limitations as to the specific coins that those counters are set up to count. The Coin Master offers more flexibility and can count a wider variety of coins, including tokens and most foreign coins.
The Coin Master is designed to quietly count, wrap or bag coins in a very high speed manner. The offsort function is designed to count or package the largest diameter coin first and separate the smaller diameter coins into a different bag or tray. This process can then be repeated until all coin denominations have been counted or packaged.
The optional packaging tubes and pre-crimped shotgun shell style coin wrappers are much easier and faster to use than traditional flat wrappers. These packaging tubes and coin wrappers will help you save a substantial amount of time packaging coins!
Technical Specifications:
Coin / Token Diameter - 15 - 35 mm Coin / Token Thickness 1.0 - 3.5 mm
Modes - Counting, Adding, Bagging, Batching, and Packaging.

Wonder where they go. Coin dealers have deals with banks, loan companies, other places where coins are brought in. They buy all they can get their hands on. They will make anywhere from a few cents to thousands of dollars on such deals.

I got curious about these guys and did a little research.
First of all, Coinstar used to be in Safeway stores (Randall's, Von's, ...), but Safeway decided to kick them out. I didn't care so much why, but it is interesting to note that Safeway created the CoinMaster service to replace Coinstar. So, Safeway is doing their own thing here.
As to Coinstar, they claim that there is $10.5B in change outstanding at any time and that they process $2.3B in change annually. That's a lot of coins.
Here's an interesting quote from their 10-K -- In particular, we contract with third-party providers to arrange for pick-up, processing and deposit of coins as well as limited servicing of our machines. We generally contract with a single transportation provider and coin processor to service a particular region and either party generally can terminate the contracts with advance notice ranging from 30 to 90 days.
I had hoped to see some detail in their sources of revenue in the 10-K, but it wasn't there. Mainly, I was interested to see if there was any mention of above face value sales of coins. Probably insignificant to them, relatively speaking, even if it exists.
