I'm considering buying a $1000 bag of dimes. If you had to choose between that, or 4 boxes of dimes, which would you choose? They tell me the dimes are from other financial institutions.

I'd get the bags, go cash them in, then get the boxes!

At least with the bag you are unlikly to get $1,000 of new dimes straight from the mint. Assuming you are looking for 90% silver that is.

I would say go for the bag because there may be part of someones collection in there that someone dropped off at the institutions

Thanks for the advice. I went buying before reading these posts. I went to a bank that had a lot of dime cwr's (98)(customer wrapped rolls). I bought a box at one bank and a second box at another. I have 98 cwr's and 118 fed rolls. Y'alls advice makes good sense and I am gonna buy that bag of dimes on monday. I'm goin' in. One thing that concerns me about buying a "bag" is that what if its significantly short?

That's the chances you take, of course there have been tales of the count being off the other way...
I once got a bag of Halves that had 9 small dollar coins, 17 Pennies and a Quarter (and a machine screw and a bent key) in it as well as exactally $500 in Halves.

Also keep in mind, that bag could also be someones dump... But I would still buy and sort it just in case...

Me personally, I would buy and sort all of it, bag and boxes.

Things are looking better after my recent 2 consecutive skunks. After 23 fed rolls and 11 cwrs, I have a 50,60, and 64. 2 dimes from the fed rolls and one from the dimes that were tithed.

Bags are the way to go. like misteroman said, no unwrapping. You could sort the bag in less time than it would take you to unwrap the rolls.

Rolls in boxes come with their own wrapper for re-rolling (loomis, not brinks. Brinks have plastic ), bags don't. Thought I should mention that.

Many banks, if not most, won't accept bagged or loose coin. My bank only takes rolled coin, and I haven't been able to find a free coin counter anywhere in this area. Granted I don't sort often and haven't made much of an effort to find one...

I think it was the 17th bag of loose Halves I brought in, they counted them up and got $500 on the nose (again) after I told them there was $500 in the bag (again).
After a brief discussion among the manager and the tellers (some I had coached in Co-ed softball) they now give me the plastic bank bags and just ask me to put $500 in them when I dump. It save time for everybody involved. One of the advantages of living in a small town(and maybe selling Ikes to them at cost helps a bit, too).
Funny, I still wrap my Pennies and bring them back in a used box.

find the largest branch in town that deals with commercial clients - they are most likely to accept bags.

dump counters - many credit unions have these. i live in a large city with maybe 50 credit unions. many are now open to folks who live in a specific county - membership rules are much more lenient these days. also, many have reciprocal privileges, so you can make a deposit to your account (i.e. dump in their coin counter) and have it count towards the account at your CU. Better yet, CU's are a source of bagged coins.

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X

That sucks. I get instant cash for my loose returns.

Well, I got up this morning and went and bought the $1000 bag and a box for good measure. After 5 rolls from the bag, I got my first silver...a 64. The box was dated Mar22 of 2007. This time of year I like getting boxes dated November and December. Those are the months people turn in their collection for xmas expenses. Also, I finished the last of the three boxes of nickels I've had lying around for the past month. Got one 1942 P war nickel. Those have become few and far between.

Update:
Ok folks, the bag is turning out to be a good deal. Here's what I have:

After only 2.5% of the bag sorted - 1964 roos
After only 17% of the bag sorted - 1953 roos
After only 20% of the bag sorted - 1959 roos
After only 23% of the bag sorted - 1964 roos
After only 26% of the bag sorted - 1960 roos
After only 42% of the bag sorted - 1964 roos

I hope this keeps up!

I'm under the impression this is a bag of rolls... Not a bag of loose dimes.

A ¼ of the way through the bag and you already found four Ag, that is excellent. You are already averaging the equivalent of 1 per box.

Keep us posted.

Its a bag of loose dimes. 10,000 dimes, 200 rolls. I have 5 silvers at 26% of the bag done. Thats 2600 dimes or just over one box. I'm running at 5 silvers per box (well, a little over one box). I reroll as I go. I used rolls to show the position of the first dime in the sort. Thats because I couldn't say if it was the 220th dime, 209th dime, 243rd dime, etc, etc.

That is the equivilent average of 2 per box, respectable numbers. That bag was definitely worth buying.

Now go get those 4 boxes you were asking about. Ag is flowing good right now.
