For about a month now, I have been getting a few boxes of dimes from loomis dated Dec,24th, 2008. I guess they mis-set their stamping gun. I have had a major bank tell me they will no longer sell boxes of coins to me. What scares me is that this is one of the branches that I have taken the LEAST advantage of. I think I am gonna have to temper down my activities a little. Its difficult for me not to ask for a box that I know has silver in it. For instance, if I get a box with an inspection date of Nov 23rd, 2008 and its got a large percentage of silver, its difficult for me not to go back and ask for more boxes with that same date. Is that taking advantage?

I think you are doing the right thing Dan. You have to spread your action around a little bit.. the banks don't relish the idea of providing large #'s of boxes to us collectors. It is all about the profit for them.
This is why there is a bank on every corner.. so if one doesn't want to do business with you, you just walk across the street. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

I think a canary in the coal mine will be when most banks start tightening up on selling us boxes of coins free of fees. That is when the jig will be up. I am so jaded now about interest rates and where to invest that I am about to politely complain at any bank that hassles me about my coin collecting. The sad truth is you are actually getting better returns pulling old silver coins out of the circulating coinage versus leaving the money in a bank CD. How can a bank counter something like that? I mean, it is pathetic that circulating coinage actually gets better returns for the metal content than leaving your money in the bank. |

I opened up discussions with a new bank today about getting some halves. The branch manager was very forthcoming when I started the conversation off asking about CD rates. I think if you (can) offer to deposit some real cash, it may help. |

Short answer, YES.
Longer answer, when the delivery truck picks up their orders for delivery they pick the boxes off a pallet in no special way and take them off the truck in no special way.In other words ,its pot luck what you get.
I've gotten boxes with dates spanning not months but years in the same order.
Asking for certain dates is a pain in the ass for these people. You are also tipping your hat to what may be of interest to you and now them.
Look, even if you ask for roles or boxes and they give you rolls or boxes that have obviously been searched the best thing to do is take them and say thank you very much.
Sometimes you Win.
Sometimes you lose...

All of Wachovia branches will no longer allow me to buy coins. The funny thing is that they told me that in order for me to continue to buy coins, I'd have to open an account. I did that. When I told them that, their excuse was that they were making a mistake in the beginning by selling me boxes of coins. I feel so guilty over this that I am going to return all the coins they sold me.....over time. |

Red, it is not always pot luck what you get. That 32 silver dime box was inspected on a particular date, and by going back and getting more of the same inspection dated boxes, I got more than the average number of dimes per box. Of course thats probably what got me in trouble, but I'm not debating that, just that things are always pot luck. |
